4th times a charm.....

Well. I finally picked up, what I hope to be, my last DSM for a while. I have been messing around with some Subaru's for the past couple months, and just wasn't happy. So I found a new, well..new to me, car.

Its a 1992 TSI Auto. I was specifically looking for an auto cause I would love to get to actually do some drag racing this summer. And I honestly cant race a 5 speed worth a dam.

A little about the car. As far as I now is its stock other than a Pace Setter tubular manifold. Other than that there is nothing else done to it.

I bought it with a bad timing belt, so I knew it already needed a head. I picked the car up today, and than started working on it. Only took me and a buddy about 1.5-2 hours to get the head pulled.

Here are some pics. Sorry i dont have any before pics, I was to impatient and just wanted to get to work.

Interior is all there, it was already unbolted so I just stashed it away to get the carpet cleaned up.

Re: 4th times a charm.....

Its an AWD.

And I was thinking about doing some work on the trans, but kinda wanting to see if it needs more work first. I would hate to put a little bit into just to find out that it needs to be rebuilt or something like that.

So once I get it running I will go from there. Its not my only car so if I get it together and something else needs work than its fine. Plus I actually have a shop to work in now, so I am way more happy to pull things apart. No more working in my driveway. lol.

Re: 4th times a charm.....

Looks like you picked up a good/fun project.

No need to buy any shift kits though unless you want to spend money. Get something to run full line pressure and you're set into the 10's.

Re: 4th times a charm.....

I have to partialy disagree with saying there is no need for a shift kit. The major point is to reduce the inherted flaws in the valve body and allow firmer flow to the clutches. Also there are steel check balls that are replaced by lighter versions in the valve body as they were banging into the seperator plate and chewing it up.

Besides, its probably a good idea to drop the pan and replace the trans filter, why not install a shift kit?

As far as your trans being healthy, if your pulse generator/speed sensors, shift solenoids are good, and your transmission fluid doesnt smell burt, your trans is most likely just fine. Unless of course someone recently changed the fluid because they were trying to fix a slipping trans.

To each his own...

I'm cheap and only like to spend money to go fast when/if I have to.

Re: 4th times a charm.....

Actual miles of the car are unknown. But going by the condition, there are alot of them. lol. The dash says 60,000 which can not be true.

The body does some work, but so far while working on it, everything else looks good. Dirty as hell, but good.

I was able to scrounge up the rest of the money I needed to pick up a 5 speed ecu, 450 injectors, and matching fpr. I did need injectors, so I just took it as a chance to do this minor mod at once.

Now just gotta finish cleaning up the timing belt area, and should be able to put it back together. Just gotta order new timing pulleys. they didn't look so good.

Also found out tonight that the car has a set of Eibach Lowering springs with KYB struts on it. And they look to be in decent shape.

Re: 4th times a charm.....

Holy crap......Went to the salvage yard today to pick up a right front spindle and found some good stuff in a talon.

Just sittin there was a set of ARP headstuds. Brand new in the box. And not to far from what was another set of headstuds wrapped up and all nice in a plastic bag. Also found a data logger cable in the car so I grabbed that too.

The car had pretty much all the small stuff I needed. So i went to town digging threw it. Was a pretty good day. Now just to get the stuff on my Talon. lol

Re: 4th times a charm.....

Right now. To get it running. lol.

After that, I am not 100% sure yet. I am gonna just start doing things one at a time and see where it ends. Thats it, if it ends.

Re: 4th times a charm.....

Got the car almost together. Just tying up some little things. Got my 5 speed ECU today, gonna get that in tomorrow.

Now my only thing is, since I did the emissions delete and got rid of the factory boost control selonoid, can I just run off wastegate boost, or do I need a boost controller of some sort. I just wanna make sure before I start driving the car.

Re: 4th times a charm.....

Got the car running tonight, but had a little issue. I didn't know what it was at first, but something was tearing up the inside edge of the timing belt. i only ran it a couple minutes, than tore the front cover apart to see what it was. Somehow the little metal plate that goes between the timing belt and balance shaft belt had gotten bent just enough to rub on the edge of the belt.

My question is now, can I still run this belt or should I just get a new one. This one was brand new when installed, so its only had like not even 3 minutes of runtime on it.

Here is a pic of the worst part on the belt I could find. I am just not sure if it would be ok to run. I mean long term wise.

My honest answer is to replace it, but I don't know how much you like that one.

Re: 4th times a charm.....

I am just gonna grab a new one from work, and keep this one as a emergency spare. So hopefully I will have it running again tonight.

Re: 4th times a charm.....

Well, got another timing belt and got it all together. Now just trying to find time to top off all the fluids and make sure its good to go.

Also picked up a set of 17" eclipse stock wheels. I needed a couple tires for my stock wheels, and got this set for cheaper than a couple new tires. Not to bad.
