No Spark...

Hey Guys,
Im working on a 1999 Chevy 1500 5.3L.
We did a complete motor swap with a 2002 5.3L. They are a direct swap.
After completing the swap the motor will not fire up. It turns but no spark.
It has coil packs just like our cars. I checked the Cam Angle Sensor, changed out the Crank Angle sensor, tried a different set of known good coil packs, checked Fuses, Probed the plugs on the harness that plug into the coil pack and each have a good ground, good positive, It doesnt seem that the reference wires are not getting much though. So im a little still nothing. I am at my wits end with this Truck.
Can anyone else please shed some light as to why a car/truck with coil packs would not get spark?

Re: No Spark...

Did you also swap the ECU? Most new vehicles have an immobilizer system built into the ECU using the key. If you swapped the ECU, swap it back. Short of that I'd just look into that a little more, it's gotten me on some of the newer stuff, not sure if it applies directly to your situation though, just something to think about.

Re: No Spark...

We did not swap the ECU. I was thinking about pulling out the ecu today and checking the board if there were any burn marks.
we also checked on my car unplugging the Cam angle sensor and seeing if there was spark, which it was still getting spark. which makes me think that its only the crank angle sensor that causes the spark.

Car-part shows that engine as 99 only. Sometimes the changes are small, but they are usually right. I would be looking at wiring/electrical. On the newer stuff I have pretty much given up on swapping model years around, especially with Chevy. From 95 to early 00's they were horrible.

Re: No Spark...

The only things that i saw that were different were the Oil Pressure sensor for the FP, and there was a CARB thing that was for emmissions. Other then that it was a direct swap.
I checked on Alldatapro.com and started checking part number differences between the 99 and 2002 motors. The Cam Position sensor, Crank Position sensor, Crankshaft part numbers were all the same numbers.
At this point we are having him take the truck to the dealer or another shop and seeing if they can figure it out.
But thank you all for the information.

check the connectors going to the coil pack and the ones to the CKP sensor,
sometimes the female end gets opened to wide when they are disconnected /connected repeatedly

Re: No Spark...

First, why would you swap a 5.3 for a 5.3? And B, why would you do anything to a chevy truck? Just throw it away.

(My guess is a bad ground. Mitsu-style members have ground problems.)

It was a replacement motor because he ran through a puddle that was too deep and sucked in a whole bunch of water. (not smart) and blew the motor.
We swapped a 5.3 for a 5.3 because he needs a truck that runs and wanted a direct swap to avoid problems.

We found that it was actually the Crank Angle sensor wires had gotten pinched. so fixed it, and now the truck runs.

Haha looks like that didn't work out too well for him. Glad you figured it out though!
