Re: Anyone with a valve spring compressor i can use with the head on for rent
If you cant find one (I had a hard time finding one to rent or buy cheaply back home) get a big ass C clamp and an open ended wrench that goes over the retainer, but doesnt get in the way and jimmy with it until you can get your shit out (I think 15mm was the money size for me). Its pretty ghetto, takes some finesse, and is pretty time consuming, but if you need to get your shit undone and you are cheap like me, it works.

Re: Anyone with a valve spring compressor i can use with the head on for rent
An 8" C clamp and a 5/8ths deep socket will run you about $15 or so dollars. Take a grinder and remove two sides of the socket, while leaving a ring to stay in contact with the retainer (it will take awhile since the socket is probably forged). Like Dustin said, it's time consuming. You can get a writeup about it on vfaq. I believe it only has the valve seal replacement article, but you'll have all the info you'll need to do it.

Just go get the right tool. From Lisle the compressor is $26. And then you have the right tool and its a lot easier.

Re: Anyone with a valve spring compressor i can use with the head on for rent
I've never seen a spring compressor in use, with the head still on the car! I'm doing my 280 install this weekend.
I'd do the cams, springs and valve stem seal install for you, but honestly that's a lot of work for only 200 bucks. You need to remove the head, and I assume your head is not as easy to remove as mine is ( I don't have anything but a turbo and motor to contend with).

Re: Anyone with a valve spring compressor i can use with the head on for rent
The tool was $350 last time I saw it. You'd need to feed a long nylon rope into the chamber through the spark plug hole to ensure that the valves don't end up in the chamber - which would force you to take off the head. If I were you, I'd just take the head off, since you'll need to replace the timing belt. Why not do the headgasket as well?

That's what I'm doing. I figure why not. It's not like it's difficult.

I'm with Corey. If you're going to do it, do it in the butt.

Re: Anyone with a valve spring compressor i can use with the head on for rent
I replaced timing belt bs belt and all the idler pulley crap about 4k miles ago. I found the entire compressor for our heads with the head still on for190 new. Also ebay sells some generic ones that work with a little customizing for 90 shipped. I know guys on dsmtuners who use them. As far as the nylon rope yes thats what i plan to do, but if a valve falls i will pull the head, but hopefully no need. Also since i already have adjustable cam gears on the stock cams, im hoping ot not have to screw with the timing at all, but thats hope i have seen a few people try it and it only worked once. Kinda short on money at the moment, haha i have 200 and thats it, and the car is my daily driver. So if possible i would not like to pull the head because after the 160 dollars for arps' and cometic and then to get it decked and resurfaced plus build the 20 clamp thing i would be way beyond my current budget. College is a pain and ruins all the fun.
As far as being alot of work for 200 dollars true, but im more looking for someone to just come help me get it done right. They can say line that up i will do it and so on. Hopefully they wont even have to get their hands too dirty. Just looking for someone with some considerable experience.
Also i could pay 185 plus you cna have the stock cmas if thats any better of a deal.

Re: Anyone with a valve spring compressor i can use with the head on for rent
I only know of three valve spring compressors where you can use them with the head on. Snap-on (YA9140), Mitsubishi (MD998772) and Miller Special Tools (which looks like the Mitsu - and it just might be). Snap-on can be had for $130ish and the Mitsu/Miller for $350+. The Mitsu/Miller tool is what is pictured in the vfaq writeup. The Snap-on looks a bit like a homemade kit I once saw, which didn't look very impressive - but I guess it works. If you only have $200 and you're dead set on leaving the head on, buy the Snap-on tool and do it yourself. I'll then be happy to reimburse you some cash for the tool...

Re: Anyone with a valve spring compressor i can use with the head on for rent
Man Its too bad I get a 50% discount on snapon BUT he just came to our school.
As for this rope crap, I dont understand that. BUT What you can do is...
Make sure all the valves in that cylider are closed.
Hook up a cylider leak tester(to put compressed air into the cylinder)
remove the spings and magicly the valves stay in place(it may be because of the compressed air below it that is forcing it up into its seat, but who knows )

A. You'll need a big ass compressor.
B. There's still a chance that the valves will drop down into the chamber.

Re: Anyone with a valve spring compressor i can use with the head on for rent
Well maybe i wil do the rope and then also try and keep the clynders full of air. Also i heard from someone that if you rotate each cylinder to top dead center when you do it they wont fall far enough that you can reach them with a needle nose if they fall a littile, but thats sounds way to dangerous for me.
Here is the link to the ebay ones i was talking abotu earlier.

These are bad a** for hondas someone should make something similar for dsms http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/valve...99683085QQrdZ1

Also, I am working on a tool that will hold the valves up without using air or compression while the head it still on the car. Just to make things a lot easier!
