Boost Activated Exhaust Cutout!

http://atpturbo.com/root/releases/release091004.htm
Just saw this while looking at couplers. Lately i had been thinking about a cutout. this may be a good option.

Re: Boost Activated Exhaust Cutout!

Repost, yea it looks ok except airflow does not like 90 Degree angles So thats a shitty design.

A cutout with a switch works better so you dont open it everytime you boost around town.

Re: Boost Activated Exhaust Cutout!

My friend has a BMW with dual tip exhaust and one of the tips has an actuator in it and at WOT it opens up. wierd BMW crap. But yah except for the 90 degree it would be alright.

Re: Boost Activated Exhaust Cutout!

My bike has something similar to that, only it doesn't dump to the atmosphere. The way that works is depending on throttle position, engine rpm, and gear position it opens and closes a butterfly valve in the pipe right behind the collector. It's pretty sweet.

Re: Boost Activated Exhaust Cutout!

The things are awesome.

The way I look at it is you get another manual boost controller and you can set how many pounds of boost it needs to see before it opens the cutout. That way around town you wont have to deal with it.

Re: Boost Activated Exhaust Cutout!

the whole idea is flawed, basically its a controlled exhaust leak. Leaks don't free up hp. If you were abel to open that up and close the other pipe off that would be a better idea but then you'd have uncatalyzed exhaust floating into your cabin.

Re: Boost Activated Exhaust Cutout!

Wierd, I wonder why all the LS1 guys make 9-15whp when they have cutouts opened then.

Leaks don't free up hp, but reducing backpressure does.

Re: Boost Activated Exhaust Cutout!

I have a JC Whitney in-dash manual cut-out. Works ok, it kindof leaks when closed though, not too noticable. And it did help a lot. Its on my stock exhaust in the middle of my downpipe. Im neck to neck with a stock 3/S tt when I have it opened, but when it is closed, I slowly get walked.

Electric cutout is the way to go. It would just get too old having it open every time you step on it. Having the joys of driving being cutout, such as having a convo with that special passenger or listening to your favorite Tool melody would be no more. You would get noticed by undo attention (i.e. theives and cops) and get singled out in one way or another. Keep it lo-pro. Again, I say, electric cutout.

Check out how FP mounts their wastegates:

I have an idea which I believe would remedy this. It would be an adjustable, boost activated cutout based off of intake manifold pressure.

Re: Boost Activated Exhaust Cutout!

90 degrees with some curve to it will outflow a straight cut 90 degree turn. Im pretty sure that tial casting has a curved wall on the inside.

You're in luck. The first post shows a company selling that very product.

Re: Boost Activated Exhaust Cutout!

FP's design isn't the absolute perfect design, but it's plenty close enough for 99.9% of the DSM crowd and it's much easier to package.

I'm installing that very setup right now, we'll just say the bigger turbo oil drain lines up perfectly with the 1G front motor mount. Crap. And that 02 housing setup in the picture is a hell of a lot nicer than the stupid 02 pipe they sell off the shelf that doesn't line up with any known exhaust system.

Nah, mine's different. I'm thinking something along the line of having a pressure transducer mounted near the throttle body inlet and rotating the butterfly valve with a linear actuator. The pressure transducer would be fed into a small controller mounted in the cab which would allow full manual control over the valve or automatic control of the valve based off of boost pressure (using the readings from the pressure transducer).

You are in the same situation I was in just before the LSE dyno day then huh?
