Re: Calling Minnesota DSMers
ok, from the begining, I got the car a few months ago, I was having problems w/ it killing at lights when it was up to temp, replaced the O2 sensor, Idle speed stabalizer, plugs/wires, new intake/filter, and tightened the alternator so I didn't go through any more belts.... the latest thing that I've done was the plugs/wires (Nology/NKG) and one of the wires has poped off twice at the coil, and now it runs fine from cold, but second start while hot and I get a CEL and it runs Shi**y. I've had it in to several differant places and they all say bla bla bla, give me money...or don't even want to work on it...I wouldn't mind spending money if they were going to "fix" something, but Tires Plus looked at it ($90) and said I need new plugs/wires, after I had told them I had them on order allready.

Re: Calling Minnesota DSMers
Never take your car to Tires Plus. Paying someone who knows less about cars than the average DSM'r is a waste of money. Contact one of the vendors here. It's probably something real simple upon viewing.

Re: Calling Minnesota DSMers
So, does anyone know of a good local place to bring it? I live in Lakeville, and work in Inver Grove Heights.

Those plug wires shouldn't be coming of the coil pack. Either you have them on wrong or tied up somehow where lenth is an issues and there is no flex, or something in the metal parts is bent or messed up and not allowing it to seat right.
For the issues after the car is warmed up, does it always start right away? Here is a link on some things to look at if that happens :
http://www.dsm.org/how-tos/JFM/HotStart.html
Did the previous owner hack the shit out os the MAS?
Just a few thoughts, but I am the last person you want to take final advice from
Keep that car AWAY from Tires Plus. If you want a shop to look at it contact one of the sponsors on here.

Re: Calling Minnesota DSMers
some things you can do:
check if you wires are installed correctly.
check or adjust your timing
when your cel is on, extract the code from diagnostic port. you can do with a mutimeter. a pocketlogger would be nice.
check your ecu if it has been re-capped
try those if you can with this bad weather.

Re: Calling Minnesota DSMers
What year and model? Does it start back up when it dies at the light? If you have a turbo model how is it boosting? You need to give more info. This is like trying to find a needle in a haystack blind folded.

Re: Calling Minnesota DSMers
ok, 1990 GSX (thats a turbo one), 5 spd, Allways starts, cold hot whatever. I think the wires are fine now, I spread the end open a little on all of them, and they stey put. no more cel today, I stopped for gas after driving 1/2 hr, and it ran fine the rest of the way home, except it died at a light again once. It all seems to change whats happening, now I'm back to the original problem that started everything. (minor idle surge, low idle, killing when up to temp at a light. Boost is fine, about 12-13 or so. I tried checking for boost leaks, I built one of those checker things, but it didn't hold pressure, and I couldn't hear where it was comming from, gets cold in the garage. I wouldn't mind briinging it in somewhere, if they knew what the hell they were doing, besides ripping me off. Oh, I do have a datalogger, but no idea how to use it, and yes, the MAS is hacked, but it looks like they did a good job opening it up.

why in the hell would you bring your car to a tire store?
that is like bringing a transmission to best buy to get it fixed.

Re: Calling Minnesota DSMers
I'll be picking up a pocketlogger in the next few days assuming I can find what I want for the price I need. You're more than welcome to swing by and borrow it.
But JUST IN CASE... is your blow-off valve recirculated to the intake?

I have a PL cable that I don't use, if you want it for relatively cheap. I have the software for it too, I'm pretty sure it'll work on a diff PDA than mine as long as you change your reg. name to mine.

WOW! I never thought that I would see the day that Allan corrects someone. I guess that school really is paying off.
I must agree, all of the sponsors on this site really know their sh*t!

Re: Calling Minnesota DSMers
You haven't checked fuel pressure, both cold and warm, have you? They may indicate a problem as well...plus, it's always good to know you're FP on a turbo car eh?

Sounds warm up related. Have you had a chance to have the CEL pulled?
By running "shitty", what do you mean exactly? Lack of power? No idle? Wandering idle? (revs up and down up and down)
The plug wires should not be popping off the coilpacks. Check the inside of the wire and make sure the metal connecter isn't expanded to much, you might not be getting a good connection. Also, like mentioned above, make sure you have no routing issues that are causing a binding issue.
I would start by having the CEL pulled. Odds are it is a nasty leak post MAS (mass airflow sensor). It could also be related to one of the warm-up circuits/systems or a failed MAS as well. Like Jakey mentioned, make sure you CBV (blow off valve is the common name for it, it should actually be functioning like a compressor bypass valve. By this I mean, make sure the outlet tube is hooked up to you intake stream before your turbocharger) is hooked up properly. Check for vacumm/boost leaks, and make sure all your wiring around your thermostat housing is intact.
Best of luck.
