I used to do wireless security as a business, I gave up after i realized how stupid people were with this. You can inform them and they won't fix it, you can offer your services at a reasonable cost to fix it and they will do nothing. They may claim they will secure their own equipment, but until they get hacked or blamed for something a hacker did using their connection, they won't do anything. We have driven with my libretto and yagi from the shop to Metzgers house and hit over 200 WiFi access points one way, about 70% were not protected. At least half of the ones I see won't even make you research their system to find the IP ranges, they will happily DHCP you an address.

There is also talk that their will be open wireless available for public use in the entire downtown St Paul area legally. I don't see how they can do it being as it would effect the buisness of the local ISP's pretty significantly, but that is what I have heard. I know there are other cities doing the same. There are also a number of public wireless "hotspots" that are freely available to those within range around the cities. Most at resteraunts or coffee houses. The Keys Cafe on Lexington and Larpenteur for example. I can be anywhere within a few hundred yards of the building and get fast internet without using any specific antennas on the card, just the normal cisco.

BTW Enes, if you want to know the ip you show up from at any given location, you can hit http://www.whatismyip.com and it will tell you. I have a script to hit it with lynx, makes it quick and easy.

a guy was just sent to prision for 3 years for unlawful access to a computer network. What you are doing is hacking.

as for WiFi all over st.paul
any company stupid enough to use that as their inet connection deserves to be hacked.

I could sit there with a sniffer and get ALL their data while just sitting their with a sniffer. It will affect the stupid businesses, but not the good ones.

my wifi is secured with 128bit wep and mac filtering. Wish it had WPA with AES, but oh well

it's .11g so it's nice to just sit on the couch and type or surf with the laptop.

it was one of my tenants ;p so no biggie. I talked to him about it and i have secured it for him, he didn't know how. I added my mac to the list so that i can access it wenever i want and am in the neighborhood ;p

Either way... no jail time for me if i don't addmit it was me infront of cops.

That guy was a moron, he actually admited, if he just said NO, thats as far as it would have gone!

That was also the first documented case of someone being prosecuted for it as a crime. A few years back, I did some consulting for a company basically to show them how to hack WiFi and they pretty much did a public demo of the whole thing for the WCCO evening news with me in the background in disbelief they could be that stupid. I had told them after 9/11 hacking was upgraded to a terroristic offense and they had to limit themselves to showing the vulnerability without actually accessing anyones network. They ignored that so I clammed up and only did what they paid me for, educating them and finding the networks. Of course even with that very public display of stupidity, there were no known attempts to prosecute. You can still find copies of the news segment by searching the net for "wcco wireless report".

Considering the incredible volumes of people involved in war driving, and accessing WiFi on a small scale or large, I really doubt anyone is in a lot of danger of being prosecuted, they have to be physically cought first. Any time I have been um "researching" along those lines, I use spoofed MAC addresses, anonymous proxy servers and invalid local host names. If you are not physically caught in a case like that, it would be pretty much impossible to prove.

plus they have to know, most people will never know unless you are hoggin their bandwidth. Hell someone could have broken my wep key and used a mac off the list and I wouldn't know because I have not checked the logs. To be honest if they can crack wep and spoof the proper MAC, i'd LET them have access ;-D

Just cut over last fall from WEP, as it's been crack wide open for some time now. And even spoofing MAC's is no big deal anymore either.

Server 2003's built in Authentication sevices make changing keys on all our laptops and access points totally obsolite.

Just add/remove wireless users to the wireless groups ACE's, and your done, serverside. Client side setup the driver grab a fresh certificate and your done.

We could run with the AES if more the clients Wifi interfaces drivers supported it but few do yet at this point.

Overall it's a very nice slick, seemless, secure system, from M$ even, for once....

Nope I'm running AES not TPK on the WAS server at home off one of the main OC3 interfaces.

The other 2 interfaces I leave wide open with SSIDs of "opensoBnice" and "Free4All" on 200 mw SMC AP's with ext Antenna. I can pull it in a good 3 blocks away on a Cantanta.

i could run a radius server and keyswap frequently, if I thought there was a need, the other 40 or so wireless people in range of my halo are much less secure as is and likely a quicker choice than my system. That and MS is considerably easier to hack than my "hardened" linux system. Not impossible granted but very unlikely.

As for the ubernerd thing, I no longer fit that description
