start up

91 Eagle talon tsi AWD. 80xxx on motor.
I just started looking into why the car has extended crank time. So I replaced the capacitors in the ECM, more as a preventative measure. Once the engine is running it seams to run good. The crank time is like five to six revolutions. My thoughts are; timing off, fuel pressure low, compression low, vacuum leak, and poor ignition. So I plan on checking; compression, timing, replacing the PCV and checking for other vacuum leaks, replacing plugs & wires and checking spark, replace the fuel pump (upgrade) the fuel filter is new, replacing the FPR (upgrade). Any other ideas?

Re: start up

I would start at timing and fuel pressure.

Re: start up

I would check out the fuel pump relay. That is supposed to turn the fuel pump on when the key is in the on position. If it goes bad it takes until the engine starts turning over to start up the fuel pump. It is in the center console under the radio.

It's the MPI relay, and if it's bad, the fuel pump will not run at all. The ECU initially turns on the pump and squirts the injectors for a few MS to start, then the CAS sends a signal to the ECU that the engine is running and to keep supplying fuel.

I'm guessing a dirty fuel filter or injectors is the problem here.

Check for a leaking injector or bad injector O-ring

Re: start up

Next week I'm doing the timming belts, and going to reset the idle & timming with the gun, so I will check the fuel psi and Operation at that time.

Re: start up

*Update* I replaced the timing belts tonight and reset the idle and timing. The timing was way off, when I set the timing to 5deg the car would not idle, so I adjusted the idle so it would run, then set the timing. So now the car starts up normal.
