Important information for owners of MAP EF series turbochargers for Evo X

Recently we received a handful of reports from Evo X turbocharger owners that seemingly out of no where began experiencing issues with loss of preload and as a result slow spool characteristics. Upon further inspection it was realized that the issue was not the actuator, rather it was the wastegate flapper and arm which were deforming due to prolonged exposure to high exhaust gas temperatures (predominantly road race vehicles).

As MAP turbochargers are intended for use in even the most extreme environments, a failure like this is simply not acceptable. With that being said, we have been working diligently with our supplier and have developed a solution that involves replacing the wastegate arm and flapper with components manufactured from a different, more heat resistant metallurgy. Effective October 1st all new Evo X EF Series turbochargers shipping from our facility will include these upgraded components.

Unfortunately, for existing turbochargers these new components must be installed into the turbine housing which requires removal from the vehicle (removing the downpipe first and then the turbine housing only whilst leaving the rest of the turbocharger and manifold in place is recommended) and forwarding to our facility. We will be happy to facilitate shipping both ways, there is obviously no cost for this service, and we are also offering an exchange program to minimize downtime for our customers.

If you find yourself experiencing issues with loss of preload and resulting slow spool characteristics (or if you simply want to be proactive) please follow the link below to submit a ticket via our support help desk and we will be in touch promptly to begin the exchange process.

http://www.maperformance.com/support/

Although this issue has occurred in a very small percentage of our turbochargers my sincere apologies go out to those that were inconvenienced by this situation. We will do our best to make up for this shortcoming and learn from this experience to ensure our products meet or exceed what the marketplace has come to expect from Modern Automotive Performance.

Great job taking ownership of an issue, and doing the right/honest thing by making it right.

But guys....they didn't have any copper washers!

Love it when a company steps up and tackles a problem head on. I look forward to doing more business with such a great place!

Is it just the evox turbos that have this problem? is it the design of the manifold that cause the flapper to be faulty?

Yup, just X turbos. For whatever reason the X wastegate arms and flappers came from a different source.

Only the turbine housings are being exchanged, not the entire turbocharger.

Re: Important information for owners of MAP EF series turbochargers for Evo X

I did this swap last weekend and left my long-runner manifold in place. Only really tough part was getting the clamp that holds the hotside to the center-section back on. I actually couldn't get it myself but ANNA did! Unreal.

Anyways, you don't HAVE to take the manifold off but if you are short on hands it might save you some grief.

Also, If you've been having problems you might have fiddled with your boost control to try and compensate....turn DOWN any MBC you have as I hit 39.5psi on my first 4th gear pull on the new setup EF4 = do work!

Yea, at proving grounds even. That's why I cut like 3x 1.6' 60' times and would only run a 12.3 or so...the car was only running like 24psi up top. Then I added more WGDC in vein and got it up to 29 or so and ran several 11.8's, but the car would just fall on its face off the line as if rpms dropped below 5500 or so the car had zero power.

Also why I had a miserable time at autoX, no boost under 6000 = no fun!

Glad to hear your turbo is healed, Scheides.

Since Murlo's car appears to be on the fritz, I'd welcome some T&C on the cruise if you're up for it.

Sweet, glad this fix has you rocking again!

I vote leave it running 39psi

Re: Important information for owners of MAP EF series turbochargers for Evo X

I remember Drew mentioned/pointed out when I picked mine up that it has a new flapper and arm, but this was in mid-September, so I'm not sure if it was changed since then? Would my EF3 finished in early-mid September have this taken care of already?

Tim was yours a new turbo or an upgrade of your OEM?

I'm afraid we wouldn't have had the replacement parts at that time sir, but again it is a small percentage of the turbos we have sold to date that have experienced this.

Ok. It's not in the car yet so I would rather just take care of it. I'll be in touch! Thanks for the heads up.
