Machine Shop, O Ring head
Anyone have experience with a machine shop in the area that has cut their head for O ringing? I called a couple places in Mankato and got a long pause followed by a "we don't do that here".

My brother knows a few different people that have done his 12-valve cummins heads, I'll post em up for ya when I get ahold of him.

Re: Machine Shop, O Ring head
I called Gosh and he said he hasn't had to do it for anyone around here so I don't need it and then followed by saying he doesn't have the tooling for it, but he could do it but be ready to pay for the extra time.
That was a few months ago.

I talked to him recently. He is setup and able to do it. But it is expensive if that's all you getting. If your already getting a bore it's very cheap.

Re: Machine Shop, O Ring head
Whats the point? Unless your head/block surface isn't very flat, a MLS should be more than enough.
But, you may be shooting for tractor-pull boost levels.

Re: Machine Shop, O Ring head
Im surprised dsmers havent done this more often with the boost levels some of you are running.

Re: Machine Shop, O Ring head
I've heard of shops in other parts of the country charging about $40 per cylinder.

Re: Machine Shop, O Ring head
If I recall correctly, I had it done for either 20 or 25 per hole, but it was done to my block. I might be able to dig up a receipt, but you maybe can call the shop I used. It's the Carquest machine shop in Hopkins 952 935 0120, ask for Joe.

Re: Machine Shop, O Ring head
So all this talk about ringing the head or block... what do you use for the ring then?

stainless or copper wire. I am planning to use stainless wire with a cheapo composite head gasket.

Re: Machine Shop, O Ring head
That's what I did. Stainless steel "safety" wire. Then a regular gasket. But I surpassed my old boost level (by one psi) and it held together, so in my mind it works. The true test will be 30psi. Also, I think it would be better to o-ring the block since it's probably easier to get the groove centered on the bore. With a head, the bore centers might be slightly different than the block or inconsistent from hole to hole.

Re: Machine Shop, O Ring head
I run 35+ psi with a Fel Pro Permatorque and Arp L19's. Unless you are running crazy ass cylinder pressure, you dont need to o-ring your block.
Proper preparation is the main key, make sure your block and head are straight and your good to go.

Re: Machine Shop, O Ring head
Plus you missed the fact I said.....
Preperation is key!
I see diesels everyday at work that run 30+ psi of boost with 18:1 compression, and they have composite head gaskets!

i'm planning to pay a machine shop. I like the idea of running a more forgiving better sealing composite gasket, with the o rings to provide the combustion sealing power of a mls. I am using L19's.

Brads car runs 30 something psi plus a 100shot with the permatorque and L19s. At least i think that what he has.
