Evo for towing?

Any of you Evo owners ever think about towing anything with it? I am looking to buy a small boat, (actually my girlfriend's dad has a small aluminum one but its kinda ghey and doesn't have a strong enough trolling motor) Possibly a Bass Tracker, and was wondering if it would be pretty harsh on the car?

Opinions?

Re: Evo for towing?

I'm sure you could get down the street with it but the wear and tear on the drivetrain would be brutal. If your clutch didn't burn up it wouldn't take long before the rest of the stuff would start exploding.

Get a beater 4X4 at the end of winter for 500$ and just use it to tow the boat. A old pickup or suv. They are made to handle that kind of stuff (look at the rear diff on your evo and then look at the one on any truck and you will see what I mean). Oh yeah, don't get a 2wd truck either, they are pretty much worthless on a slippery landing.

Belongs to the DSMtalk site admin. Last I talked to him it was completely stock, but he's been collecting parts, and once it hits 200k he's doing a full rebuild and throwing a ton of goodies on.

Re: Evo for towing?

So just a tiny little aluminum thing with a trolling motor, maybe 2k pounds at the most? Hell yeah it could tow that thing. Probably would hardly notice it's back there. My dad used to tow our 17' run about with a chevy celebrity wagon (not the best idea, but it did it several times). Your talking about a little aluminum thing, heck yeah. I wouldn't make a habit out of it, but I'm sure you could. Does anyone even make a hitch for an evo though?

Someone makes one. 95talonracer has one on his 03 Evo. I think he uses it for his jetski's...

Re: Evo for towing?

thanks spaz for posting that i was just about to grab that pic. I think you will be more then fine with the evo, the only shitty thing is, that when you launch your boat and stick the rear of the car in the water its not kind on the wheel bearings ive heard

I think with a more shallow Bass boat, I shouldn't need to dip the car into the water TOO much. Maybe a little, but i'll keep that in mind!

Not sure if i would tow with the evo.... i agree with the $500 truck... but if you must..

I found this on evom:
http://forums.evolutionm.net/evo-gen...er-hauler.html

apparently a guy by the name of rallytrack (http://forums.evolutionm.net/members...allytrack.html) used to sell them for about $120 not sure if he still does....

Re: Evo for towing?

That is a great picture. There is another one of a DSM pulling a bronco 2 out of a snow bank somewhere around here also.

However my only warning is make sure it is balanced on the trailer (whatever you are towing) and that it is reasonable

Being in the landscape business, went to go drive a truck and a trailer that someone loaded the previous night, didn't load it properly, I didn't check it in the morning and the worst feeling is fish tailing in rushed traffic...

When I drove my Celica, 95talonracer had to come pull me out of my buddies ditch because their driveway was way icy and I slid to the edge of the driveway where it dips to go down to the culvert. We never got a picture but we should have!

Good call. I think I am going to try it sometime this summer. I am going to keep looking around for a tow package. I probably need a JDM bumper too then?

Re: Evo for towing?

^I had that issue when towing a car once. My friend loaded it backwards on the trailer (to make it easier to put in his garage) and the tail was wagging the dog. Need to make sure most of the weight is on the front of the trailer.

I made a hitch and tow my jetski to the lake just fine.

Re: Evo for towing?

If I can tow my 16' Lund Rebel completely full of gear with the forester and it's crappy 5spd, I'd think an evo could handle a small aluminum boat no problem.
