Anyone here built a go-kart before
I'm starting to build a new toy. I've got the kart frame sitting here just aching for some attention. I havn't really gone shopping for carrier bearings and everything yet, but I've pretty much got everything planned out. The only thing that I don't quite have my head around is how to keep the axle from moving side to side? Let's here what you guys have done in the past, I KNOW i'm not the only one here. John, we'll be chatting soon

Re: Anyone here built a go-kart before
I would use a conical bearing for the wheels, that would hold the axle in place and take the forces well. A full race ball bearing may work too, but it wouldn't be as happy with the side loads. It would have less friction though.

Re: Anyone here built a go-kart before
What kind of go-kart are you building? Just one for personal fun, or one of those racing ones?

Re: Anyone here built a go-kart before
Well back in the day we went to Northern Tool, but that was a 5hp beast... If you are building a gixxer cart I would shop online for real race cart parts, look into 125cc shifter cart parts, they should have full rear axel setups, disk breaks, slicks, the hole works. Also there is a cart race track out past Howard Lake on HW 12 that might have some used parts.

Re: Anyone here built a go-kart before
I'd love it if you did a project thread on this. I've been toying withthe idea of building a cart of some sort for a long time. Would love to see the process in action.

Torrington is needle bearings, the correct name is Tapered Roller Bearing.

Re: Anyone here built a go-kart before
All you need to do is have 1 wheel off each end of the crank, then mount that to the back or a Wagon and lets see some series $hit, after it hits 88mph.

Re: Anyone here built a go-kart before
Well, the engine's mounted on the kart frame with just bare bones mounts. The chassis will still need to be extended even more for the rear axle, and the mounts need the living shit braced out of them still, but it's in there and perfect for getting all the electronics and and everything else mocked and mounted up. I'm lazy, and tired, so i'll snap some pics tomorrow

Re: Anyone here built a go-kart before
Keep the short wheelbase if you can, rear mount the engine like a porsche or VW bug!
Also get the widest slicks you can find.

Re: Anyone here built a go-kart before
Well as promised, I snapped some pics. The frame is just some random go-kart frame that I got from my brother for a whopping 0 dollars. The engine is a GSXR 750 with a recent rebuild and a ported head. Obviously this isn't the last of the chassis modifications and welding, I just wanted it mounted so I could get everything else straightened out first. The goal for this thing is CHEAP, so most of the parts are gonna come from northern tool's go kart section. And yes, I'm very aware that I'm more than likely going to kill myself on it

Holy cow...kill your self is right. But what fun is that?
Johns Cart was fun to drive. Then again we rolled it to much I think using big ATV swamp tires was not a good idea!

Re: Anyone here built a go-kart before
Wow, I don't think that chassis is set up for anything over 5hp, nonetheless 120hp. I don't need to be a psychic to tell you I see bad things in your future!

Re: Anyone here built a go-kart before
Holy shit. If that thing actually hooks, it's gonna be a wheelie machine. Better get some skid plates or something to protect the bottom of the motor.
