Whwn upgrading towards more hp, what drivetrain parts will fail? What do I do?

I have a 1G 94 talon AWD. Stock 1G 7 bolt, LSD 4 bolt.
Upgraded turbo, fuel elements, exhaust, controllers, etc - goal is 300 whp at 18-20 psi running on the street.
What are the drivetrain/powertrain components that will commence failing? Please include anything - from engine to tranny to all possibilities that usually happen.
What will definitely fail?
What will hold up?
What do I do about the ones that fail (just replacing them is useless, need to get stuff that will hold up better)? Suggestions? Possible costs if known?

Well first of all, if you haven't already, I'd recommend getting "performance" drivetrain fluids. Get a good tranny fluid (many kinds: BG syncroshift, royal purple, gm syncromesh, redline, etc) and good fluid for your rear end and transfer case.

Possibly call a Chrysler dealer with your VIN # to see if the transfer case recall has been checked or performed.

Stock clutches will not hold up long with much power or abuse. I suggest an ACT brand clutch, more so a 2600lb with a street disk. Opinions vary, many recomend the Southbend clutches as well.

I personally have broken shift forks in a tranny, and I've even managed to break the front open differential which put a hole in the case. I wouldn't worry about the tranny too much yet. The late 1Gs have a stronger tranny anyways.

It also depends on how you drive. If you are a moron and can't shift and always grinds gears you are going to wear out your synchros and then in turn will break shift forks and rails.

This thread is a mute point though. Do some research, you will easily find out what breaks and what doesn't. Most of the things that break on DSMs are chronic and have happened a lot so it won't be hard to pinpoint them.

Starting a thread about what could happen is not going to help you. I mean if we tell you that you might throw a rod in the future are you going to go and get a fully built motor right away? If we tell you that your alternator might go four times in a year are you going to go and buy four alternators to prepare?

Just fix the car as it breaks and we will help you a long the way. This thread could get as long as a new girl thread if we listed everything that could and will happen to your car.

LOL!! You're probably right on that. I've always driven 2Gs and this is my first 1G and my 3rd dsm. Just asking for the obvious possibilities, not the long shots. For example, in a 2g, I KNOW it'll crankwalk sooner or later - that kinda stuff is what I'm looking for.

BTW, I shift well and been driving a stick for just about 15 yrs. So far I've only blown 3 clutches and 1 tranny in that time. I shift hard though and FAST. But the shifts are pretty clean.

At that power level nothing should break, unless you can't drive. You will probably be at the limits of the 2100 though. Shift forks break if you try and slam it into gear too hard and a center diff may grenade if you rev it to 7k and dump the clutch with good traction or have the wheels turned.

Let's not forget that flamidation valve mentioned in your other thread about what's broken in your driveline.

Being an engineer doesn't mean I have know a dsm. It just means I can design and manufacture stuff and if I f*** things up, I take the heat at work.

Re: Whwn upgrading towards more hp, what drivetrain parts will fail? What do I do?

I have yet to find a clutch that takes the abuse i've thrown at it, I recently blew up austins ACT2600 I bought from him a few months back... I can hear the sping parts laying in my bell housing... but this is about the best street clutch you can get, the pressure plate is really good. alot better than the 2100 i used to have..... you can stay with normal tires... and probly make like 200+ hard launches, or like get sticky tires, and blow up a center diff.... motor should hold up fine... Im puttin down right around that kind of power, and I have had no problems with the motor at all.... most reliable part of the DSM...
