Geek Speak: SEO.
Hey Fellow Nerds,
We recently launched a new site at my work. After correcting the problems this web company has made and typos etc. Ive finally got the site Live and at Rev. 1.
We use Google Analytics (Absolutely love it, its free and does a great job showing traffic, page views, and other analysis stuff for the sites).
So now im looking at doing some Search Engine Optimization, and first and foremost there wasn't a robots.txt for googles crawlers. So i started using the google webmaster tools and had it generate the Robots.txt file and verified it on the tools. So im at the start.
Now what methods do you guys use to get the page ranks up and optimize search engines to see your sites high up in the scale.
Thanks
Tom

Meta tags and cross linking. Supposedly having google ads on your site helps too

Re: Geek Speak: SEO.
Well, I agree with the whole meta tags and cross linking, but with google webmaster tools they allow you to help the bots seek out the words for you. As well as upload a site map via XML file. Which i just finished.
If you guys havent used Google analytics i highly suggest it, and best of all its free. http://www.google.com/analytics
as well as the google webmasters http://www.google.com/webmasters/

Re: Geek Speak: SEO.
I'm lucky to have people who know what they are doing do it for me. There is much more to real SEO then most anyone knows(even IT people). Finding those people who know their shit is hard to do, and when you do, it's $$. But there are a lot of good tips out there, and the Google stuff you are referencing is a good start. I've never cross linked, but I know it works/helps. Not sure about having Google ads on the site, but I don't do that either.

Re: Geek Speak: SEO.
I have to vouch for Mo here, I do A LOT of online searches for performance parts and find myself on your website quite often lol.
In regards to my website I'm very happy with our progress thusfar and agree with what was said above in regards to meta tags and crosslinking (anybody want to trade links? lol), but it also comes down to content. Good, relevant content not only helps the search engines index and display your pages properly it also brings visitors to the website, which leads to a better pagerank, which leads to improved ranking in search engines, which leads to more visitors, and so on...

LoL, I guess whatever the tech dudes are doing is working! And now I know where some of the local traffic is coming from. :P Although we still have more to do, as our indexing has hit a wall for some reason.
