tranny problem or clutch problem, can't tell..

lately my 97 AWD 2g has been real jerky in low speeds when i'm shifting. Also, for some reason sometimes it will just pop out of first gear from start or at low speeds. I took it to Car X and the guy said it could be a solenoid or something in the tranny, but he thought the clutch was ok. So then he told me to go to kennedy transmission but the guy there said they don't even work on dsm trannys, but he would drive it on monday for me and tell me what the problem could be. If anyone has any idea why the car would be doing this please let me know. I'm praying it's nothing majorly tranny related because I can't afford that. Here's a list of mods, not sure if it will help much cause it's pretty much stock: mbc, catback exhaust, bov

My guess would be that it's the tranny. I have the same problem with my 3rd and occassionally 5th gear. I have a (poorly) rebuilt tranny and the guy I got it from said something about the linkages being messed up. You can try stepping on the clutch pedal ALL the way down and see if that helps (does for my 3rd gear sometimes).

Solonoid? Is your car a manual or automatic? If its a manual, stay away from those crackheads.
If its popping out of gear and hard to shift, the transmission is probably the fault.
