TV disposal?

Aside from the tossing them in a lake and throwing them in a commercial dumpster nearby, what is a proper way of disposing of TVs? I have 3--a 13" and two 27" that have issues, and have since been replaced. I just really need to make room. Any ideas? I know you usually have to pay trash companies... thought there may be an alternative.

Re: TV disposal?

There is a guy that will come and pick up your CRT from you for free. He recycles them somehow. The guys comes once a month to the casino I work at and picks up bad monitors from the slot machines. I will check tonight to see who he is and how you can get a hold of him.

If you do end up throwing it away, take it apart and lightly hit the kneck of the CRT. It will relieve the pressure inside slowly, you will hear a slight hiss. If you do not do this it could explode on someone when being disposed of.

Re: TV disposal?

I live on a busy street in South Minneapolis. When my tv went out last summer, I just set it out on the curb, went back inside, looked out the window an hour later, and it was gone.

Re: TV disposal?

You are correct that TV's can be thrown in the garbage, but that will cost you depending on size and the hauler you have. There is also a place down off of HWY 52, I believe it's on State St and Plato, that recycles electronics. Not sure of the fee there though. In a few years all electronic equipment will need to be recycled instead of thrown in the trash due to materials in the circuit boards.

Dane you could take them to Appliance Depot in Rosemount/Inver. That's my inlaws family buisiness, they'll take care of them for you.

Re: TV disposal?

step one. Place tv on top of a trash can facing you.
Step two. Find a nice sized Rock or brick.
Step three. you and your friends take turngs throwing the Brick/rock at the TV and whoever breaks it wins.
Fun for the whole family.

I always wondered what a tv does when its smashed, and what it looks like inside the tube.

There is no pressure inside the tube, its a vacuum. The hiss you hear is air being blown into the tube.

It's not all that exciting after doing it many times. When the CRT breaks there is a large pop and the rest of it is a bunch of thick broken glass.
