TOPEKA, Kan. (Oct. 5, 2004) – Sports Car Club of America's Board of
Directors voted Monday to discontinue the sanction of its current
stage-based rally format, including the ProRally and ClubRally
Championships, beginning January 1, 2005 due to increasing risk
exposure.

"This was a difficult and unfortunate decision to make," SCCA Board
of Directors Chairman Gary Pitts said. "However, from an insurance
standpoint, the stage rally format has gotten to the point where it
puts the entire Club, its activities and entities under an undue
risk."

"We have many SCCA members whose interests lie in rally," SCCA
President and CEO Steve Johnson said. "It is my intent to allow
these members the opportunity to rally in the future and continue to
access the sport. I am confident we can accomplish this task.

"We are in negotiations to transition SCCA's elements of the stage-
based rally activity to Rally America, a longtime partner and
participant in the sport of rally."

Unaffected by the decision is SCCA's RallyCross and Road Rally
programs.

SCCA began its special stage-format ProRally Championship in 1973.
Since then, the ProRally Championship Presented by Hot Wheels has
been regarded as the top domestic rally series. The 2004
Championship has one round remaining, Lake Superior ProRally (LSPR),
which will run as scheduled Oct. 22 in Houghton, Mich.

This can and probably will be a good thing. There have been issues between the organizations for a long time. There is the NASA and the RSNA orginazations that can step in and fill SCCA's roll and will be all about rally instead of treating rally as a stepchild.

My membership is up in November, no more $225 a year for that!

I was just about to join too. I was going to rallycross the Volvo, and autocross the Nissan. Looks like I wont now.

I do agree, that there is enough interest, people involved, and money to be made, that rally will continue in some way or another.

People have been calling for NASA or another group to improve rally for ages. Now there's no need to convince organizers to step away from overpriced SCCA.

Thankfully the rally family is so tight knit across the nation that rally WILL NOT die in North America. It will just be renamed and be better than it was before.

SCCA will still sanction autocross and rallycross (autocross on an unpaved surface). They aren't going to be sanctioning and insuring stage rally (Club Rally and ProRally).

Its been a few days since the crap hit the fan. Just wanted to let everyone who cares know that I have rescinded my resignation from the BoD here in LoL.

We have some very good ideas on how to proceed with the changes that have to be made and I want to make sure that my voice is heard when that happens.

I am sure that after our next meeting (tuesday Oct. 12th **everyone is invited**) we will have a pretty good idea on what direction we need to go. When something happens I will let you all know.

Dan

Let me know if you need details on where and when the meeting is being held. Anyone can attend.
