I bought a Contour +2 a couple years ago. Debated between it and a Hero 3 Black (was no Hero 4 back then). Back then it was about $100 cheaper than the Hero 3 Black, and the reviews I read put them pretty much neck and neck with the GoPro outperforming by a hair at max resolution.
Considering I never plan to use them at their max capability (probably more like 480p or 720p), I decided to save myself $100 and get the Contour.
Unfortunately I've never really gotten a good opportunity to use it. I have it here though if you wanted to try it out. I have a cheapo external mic I bought for it as well to hopefully help with wind noise.
Couple things I found worth noting when I compared it to the Hero 3 black back in the day. Some of these however may not apply anymore with the newer Hero 4, but figured I'd share anyway.
- It has a Bluetooth based app for remote controlling. Similar to the Hero 3 but the Hero 3 is WiFi which is slower. Also the Contour App was praised as being more user friendly
- Has a built in laser leveling tool to help set it up level.
- The lense can be rotated to assist in a level picture.
I have a hero 3+ and white, The white is cheap but I haven't tried it in the higher quality settings and isn't "wide screen". My hero 3+ is meh during the day in 1080p at 60fps but its crappy compared to the hero4. Depends on what you want to do with it. If your trying to read license plates after people try and side swipe you, hero 4. Hero 3 if you just want video evidence of ricky bobby shenanigans. Night time sucks on the hero 3+ unless there is a night mode.
Both were "cheaper". If you want mega cheap. Mobius.
White came in at $149 at the walmarts.
hero3+ came as a package deal with other accessories for $300ish
Amazon is definitely a good place to start as you could get a little package deal going.
Thanks dudes, I'm gonna want to spaz it up at some point and get multiple cams.
To be honest, while I have 3, I rarely use them all. Most often I'm just using one inside the car so I can watch my lines and inputs and review them at the event on a tablet. The others are just kind of there if I do use them, just basically generating content should I choose to use it.
Though I will admit, throwing one on the fender to get footage of the brakes shooting sparks and the rotors glowing is pretty neat.

Haha nice. I always just figured for myself in the rare case I wanted simultaneous videos from both outside the car and inside, I'd use the action cam on the outside and then just use my normal digital camera for the inside.
Might want to use an external mic for that, the internal built in mic might not be able to take the loud screaming!
What size SD cards do you guys usually buy? I have a 16GB in mine right now, wondering how much footage that'll actually capture though. I probably will only be recording in 480p or 720p though.
The biggest one that the device can handle is what I use. At that low resolution, your going to hate that you went that low when you throw it on your computer. What is the FPS with those resolutions? 60?, 30? 5?

But I scored a Hero4 Silver for $260 BNIB.
Just need to get a suction cup and learn how to use it, then find my FUCKING micro SD cards.
AMAZON! for the sd card and or Micro center has pretty cheap ones. My Go pro does really nice during the day HERO 3, however at night time the play back looks very pix elated slash a lot of white dots literally all over the screen...still looks crazy sharp though. I will try and post a video except for 1080p files are HUGE like a few GB! So its a paint to upload. or takes a long time.
I should be out cruising around this weekend if you wanna check it out personally as far as how the suction cup and all works ill be happy to have you take a look at some pictures videos and let you witness the terrible sound quality when its inside the water and air proof case.
I got a buddy trying to sell his 4 silver with some extras for $260 if anybody else is looking for one. I'm tempted to pick it up but I always seem to be poor lol

May not pertain to your needs, however I have been seeing commercials for the soloshot camera which you wear a wristband or something like that and it auto-follows you with whatever you may be doing. Very cool. Would work well with snowboarding or something like that.

That erik dude on here?
I thought his was a 3?
oh well. Good deal. Gonna fire mine up at work in a few hours.
LOL @ pov action, Pat. I've seen some 'action' online already but I could tell they weren't using the 3 hehe.
$260 for the Hero4 is a really good deal. I was going to suggest the Hero2, it is still really good for what it is. Don't expect these to perform all that good at night though. I'm predicting that when the Hero 7 or 8 comes out, we'll start seeing some really exceptional low light video quality.
The lcd screen really helps a lot on the 3's and 4's. If I wanted more GP "POV" action, I'd get the H2.
