Engine Cranes?

Here is the issue I am facing. I have to pull the engine from my car. Now I was thinking about buying an engine crane as I will likely use it again from time to time. But, once I am done with my car I really wont have anywhere to store the crane. Does anyone have any solutions? For example a place that will rent a engine crane and then I can just slap it onto one of those engine holders.

Just throw out ideas if anyone has any cause I am stuck on this one.

depending on how tight your storage space is, some engine cranes fold up so they are only like 6" deep and however tall they are, so they would be really easy to lean against a garage wall or something.

That is only an option if you have your own garage tho. If you are in an apartment, you probably wouldn't want to store something like that in your parking space in a parking garage, nor would you want to store that in your bedroom or something, so renting might be the best alternative.

Have open rafters? If you do you can just put a board between a few of them and then get a chain hoist. Only problem with this is that after the engine is in the air you have to roll that car out from under it.

and hopefully your rafters don't break. lol, reinforce the rafters with 2x6's and stuff.

Yeah, I thought about the rafter idea and a Cum-Along. But, I use a storage unit as my garage. I really dont trust the structural integrity nor do I want to modify it seeing as its not mine.

Once I am out of the storage unit I just dont have any good place to put the crane. While I am there it wont be an issue. Hmmm.

You don't need an engine hoist to pull an engine. Just pull the head---> the tranny---> and then the block. I have used this method twice so far. Once at the junk yard and we just finished doing it today on James' 2g. Damn, a 2g block must weigh more than a 1g. Me and remy did it together at U pull R parts (2003eclipse saw us I think) in the winter. Today it took 3 of us to get it out (me, remy, and iceman) and we took it out the bottom. I am not sure how good this method is in installing an engine though. Haven't had to yet

You could just rent one locally somewhere. That is what I did, I rented for like half a day pulled it and put it on an engine stand and took it back till we were done building and then rented it again.

Yeah, we are trying to save money on his car so we don't have to skip out on the important things. We may or may not install it on our own. I don't have access to a pickup to bring one home either if I rented one.

i borrowed one from a friendly DSMer on this board (2 actually) and i was lucky enough they didn't need it for a while. but unfortunately i will need another one within a month or so. i get to pull my engine again.

Yeah I remember the pulling of the engine At U Pull R Parts. I also remember you two falling over like four times with the wheel barrel into the huge ass puddles damn that was quality humor.

I know, I am laughing now just thinking about it. It was twice with me pushing the thing through the big puddles and the snow. I was laughing so hard I had to have remy push and he made it the whole way without spilling it. The funniest part about it was after spilling it the first time. I picked it back up and held it in one spot laughing my ass off as we were in the back corner of the lot and we didn't make it 1/10 of the way before dropping it. I was standing there with my legs in between the wheel barrow holdin it in place. The thing tipped again and took me with it (handles tripped me). Then remy made it all the way back with out dumping it. That was fun.
