Beware! 1G4g63t
I had a misfortune to deal with this individual. I wish I would have never met him.
He was trying to sell me a maroon 1G of his with a horrid rod knock. You can't hear it from inside the car and at idle under the hood. Only if you rev it beyond 3k, it appears, terrible, obvious, brutal rod knock.
I talked to him for an hour while he was driving the car back to his house, and then I was supposed to drive it home 200 miles. He has obvious mechanical background.
He knew it all long (his build thread claims: "So now I have a rattling noise at 2900rpm). Upon asking him over the phone, he said: "It was just a heatshield". I trusted the guy. What a mistake. He lied right in my face.
He wasted my time and money and almost sold me a piece of shit. Almost.
Watch out.

Re: Beware! 1G4g63t
ok so now I feel like I have to say something. First a rod knock would be heard constantly and it would get louder and cause other issues as the engine revs up. but out of curiosity I dropped my pan to check bearings and found nothing wrong. it's had the same sound at 2900rpm for almost 4 months and I put about 200 miles a week driving to work every day. so before you cry rod knock learn a little about engines. chances are since my clutch is going bad thats where the sound is coming from.

Re: Beware! 1G4g63t
Never heard of rod knock at 2900 rpms and not at idle. when you have rod knock it should make a noise all the time. And if he has been putting 200 miles on it a week I doubt it would still be running.

Re: Beware! 1G4g63t
Actually you could hear rod knock at a higher engine speed and not hear it at a lower speed as cylinder pressure is higher. Just depends how bad it is.

Re: Beware! 1G4g63t
I've heard rod knock at speed but not at idle as well. Have you tired pulling plugs to isolate the cylinder?
TOB could also make noise, but that should change with engagement/disengagement.
Any upper end noise?

Re: Beware! 1G4g63t
I have not tried the clutch idea yet. just wanted to prove this kid wrong so I dropped my pan to look at bearings and check the rods, every thing is as it should be. I'm gonna look into this issue deeper just to be absolutely certain what the problem is. but in the end I'm still selling the car.

Re: Beware! 1G4g63t
Pretty sure they aren't. Like I said I'm gonna figure this out. at least so I can tell who ever buys it what the sound is. I'm putting the stock cams back in and giving my 272s to my buddy so I'll check lifters then. but I've gotta get rid of the car soon because I just got a notice from the city saying that I have too many cars outside my house.

Re: Beware! 1G4g63t
How is the crank end play? Sounds like the same noise my old 2g made before it crankwalked. Started very quiet, almost like it wasnt there, but then when you got above 3000 you could hear it. I drove the car like this looking everywhere for the issue for about a month or two, but then it finally gave way and died on the freeway.

Re: Beware! 1G4g63t
I fail to understand how this warrants a thread. I don't have a forum I can go to and complain about every instance someone has a for sale thread and the items are not quite in the condition they were described. I simply turn them down or make another offer based on actual condition...that's how you buy used stuff.

Re: Beware! 1G4g63t
no the harmonic balancer is something I haven't checked. but the car is for sale now locally but I'm going to continue searching out the sound but it comes from the transmission side of the engine not the front

Re: Beware! 1G4g63t
Sounds like 2 people that don't know what they are talking about are trying to fight each other about who knows what is going on.
Either way, I hope you both see your way out of the DSM community with bad attitudes. Grow up and admit you don't quite know and find out, if not just leave.

Re: Beware! 1G4g63t
I bought the car from him, real nice guy, flexed on the price and I have had ZERO hiccups with the car. It is not a rod knock, I listen to it every day.

Re: Beware! 1G4g63t
I'd call it a weird rattle at around 2500-2800 RPM. It seems like the engine is hitting a harmonic vibration at that point, could be a throwout bearing? Or even a heat shield as mentioned. Its not a rod knock whatever it is.

Maybe a spun balance shaft bearing?
