Getting the Laser ready for AutoX
Though I would post some progress I've made on my Laser. After sitting out the whole summer, I finally decided to put insurance on it and make it to the last autocross of the year here in Winona. My first thing that I did to it was change the oil, new filter. Then I drove it around for a day, had a lot of fun. After about 3 hours, the driver's side rear caliper froze up, so I limped her home. Next morning, I saw it really needed a rebuild, so I just took some material off the pads on that side so I could still drive it.
Fast forword to about a week later, today, and I started up on it again after getting some extra money after selling my r/c truck. I fabbed up a battery tie down, and fixed the previous exhaust problem. Here's what the exhaust looked like before:
Here's what it's like now:
Has a better sound now IMO. Has a deeper, more rumble to it.
Next, either today yet or tomorrow I'm going to fix the oil leak on the turbo oil return line, rebuild the driver's side rear caliper, and see if the left front wheel bearing needs to be replaced.

Re: Getting the Laser ready for AutoX
Well, yesterday I rebuilt the Left rear caliper, bled the brakes. I couldn't find any oil leaks so I just tried to clean it up the best I could undernieth.
However, I think I may have developed a large boost leak somewhere on it. I did a boost leak test this morning but couldn't find where it's coming from. I'm just going to let it sit untill after this weekend and then see if I can mess with it a bit more.
I'll be runnin the Avenger in the autocross tomorrow, so all it not lost I guess.

You'll be at DCTC? I'm running both days.

We'll see how I feel after work tonight. I tested it earlier today but couldn't find where the leak was.

Re: Getting the Laser ready for AutoX
Took another look at the car today, and I figured out the problem, however I do have a few boost leaks.
Turns out the injector plug on the number 3 injector was just kind of chillin on top of the injector. Plugged that down, checked the rest of em and took it for a nice 15 minute drive. All was back to normal.
It's the littlest shit sometimes that cause the biggest problems.

Re: Getting the Laser ready for AutoX
What exactly are you planning on accomplishing in autocross?

MAC events up here, Chippewa Valley Sports Car Club stuff down there, or what?
Have you looked at the class rules at all? I'd look and choose something close to your modification path and prep the car as well as you can for that class, it'll make it entirely more fun if you're at least somewhat competitive. I just started doing these (4th one this weekend for me) and because of my clutch and intercooler I'm thrown into Street Prepared against a prepped M3 and an older Porsche, I'm nearly 2 seconds slower than them mainly because I have zero suspension work done.
Thanks to cdeutsch here are the SCCA classes an you can run in with dumbed down rules (read the SCCA rule book for full details):
Stock (front sway bar, struts (NOT springs), any DOT tire that fits on the stock sized rim)
Street Prepared (boost, tune, suspension, clutch, intercooler, intake, exhaust, fender flares, wheels, tires)
Street Modified ( SP, plus motors, turbos, etc)
Street Touring (intake, exhaust, tune but NO BOOST MODS, suspension, wheels, tires up to 245 width and 140 min treadwear)
Prepared ( SM, plus a lot of gutting, and other crazy stuff)

Re: Getting the Laser ready for AutoX
Just from what you put there, I'd most likely fit into the street prepared category. I started reading through the rule book they have for download a day or two ago, mostly read the different classes for cars.
I'll be doing the lacrosse club of the land o lakes region.

Sweet. I was in Eau Claire for the CVSCC autocross, my first one, such a huge lot but it rained and really didn't give me a feel for what it's really like.

This next year we should get together at a few events. After running the Avenger in the one here at the Tech school track, it's all I've been thinking about for the past week. Most fun you can have for 35 bucks.
I'll be making a list of things that I need to fix before the season starts next year. It'll be a decent sized list, but it's mostly little things that should've been done a long time ago.

Re: Getting the Laser ready for AutoX
To bring this thread back from the dead, I have started collecting parts for my car. My goal is to fix the leaks, get a fmic kit for it, replace all the bad sensors, and get it ready to drive the spring cruise no problem.
Here's the pile in my room so far:
Just got the wheels today, along with the 2g tb elbow. The turbo is a chinese eIII 16g that has a slightly damaged exhaust wheel:
I'm looking for a fmic kit for around 250, used. Anyone got one?

What I have planned is to either use the exhaust wheel thats on it with the 14b exhaust housing, or use the 14b exhaust housing and wheel.
I don't think I can afford to send it out to be balanced and shit.

Re: Getting the Laser ready for AutoX
I would look into doing something about that damaged exhaust wheel. Is something wrong with the turbo you have on the car now?
