Trannys suck
Esp the dead ones.
I got my tranny from the BC apart as well as my 2 parts trannys.
Verdict:
Evo shift forks are good.
Sliders are thrashed
Bearings are done for
Gears are trashed
All 3 center difs are done for.
One has 2nd gear that looks ok, but I don't want to risk it with high rpms.
So I'm going to have to send the center dif in as a core, and get a 4spider. Ordering 1-5th gears, new hub sliders and bearings.
This is expensive. OMG. wow.
TRE seems to have some things cheaper, and Jacks Transmissions has a few things cheaper.
Anyone doing their trannys themselves, any advice?

Take your time. If your not sure about something, research until you are. If you want it to last it's going to cost money.

Re: Trannys suck
The only thing I'm not too sure about is for the center dif.
I really don't want to do welded, esp if I want to DD it or take it on a trip. So I was thinking 4spider, just unsure on how well that'll hold up

The 4 spider should be just fine. I've never heard of anyone breaking one, have you?

Re: Trannys suck
Taking the tranny apart is pretty straight forward, if you are afraid you might forget where something goes or how it looks then take pictures as you go along for reference, and also label your parts with a good desciption of location or orientation. The only thing I was confused about reassembly was setting the preload shims and how to check them.
Thats why I just had Shep give me a stage 3; 4 Spider, Chromoly forks, etc.

Re: Trannys suck
I had a welded diff from shep and one that was welded by john at LSE, he welded the shafts together as well which I was inform was mostly done on high hp/tq cars 600+.
Welded diff from shep felt fine I actually liked it the one tougher welded one sucked as it was locked hardcore just getting in and out of the driveway the shep one not so bad.

Re: Trannys suck
Welded center diff is not for a street car. Also I do not see how the Shep welded diff would "feel" any different, if its welded it will provide a 50/50 split no matter how good or bad its welded.

If you do take pictures, posted them. I have been wanting to rebuild my tranny for a while now. Maybe this would be motivation.

Well with the shep one, I had a hard time telling if it was welded, couldn't tell until 2 turns of the wheel, your one you could tell just trying to roll down the driveway and turning the wheel maybe 1/2 a turn.

Did you have different tires on the car? Change anything else? Welded is welded, no rotation allowed.

Re: Trannys suck
Nope nothing different.
Nick was with me too and he could tell it was welded, then I explained to him the differences between the two, Sam agreed with me in the way it felt.

Re: Trannys suck
Lol.. I got the tranny out of the black cherry all torn apart and the 2 spare trannys all torn down.. It was so surprising on how simple it was!
I really don't think I'll do welded center dif, just because of DDing it and the 255 wides.
I'll try and get some pics. But doubt I'll be getting any motivation until I get new gears/ syncros/ sliders/ bearings/ center dif

Re: Trannys suck
Aaron, it sounds like the Shep one is a 4 gear, not welded. Like they said, welded is welded. I have a 4 gear in my car from Shep.
I would get a junk yard tranny so you can at least get the 3-5 gears. How can ALL of the gears be bad in all 3 trannies? That just doesn't seem right. Be sure to check Shep out for trannies too. He also usually has a decent amount of used parts on hand too.

Re: Trannys suck
Some of the gears looked OKish, but nothing I would trust, esp when building a tranny.. Might as well do it right.
But the sliders had started to round the teeth of the gears.
