Re: Electric Dsm

They say $7/mo for electricity and 3 hours charge for 20 miles. If he can do that in the garage what has been the delay for OEM electric?

Pretty sweet but I would want to go faster than 55mph.

The problem is getting the mileage and safety concerns. When you convert your own you don't have to worry about safety.

Re: Electric Dsm

Just think, a bigger Electric motor and a geo metro altenator and you could go farther than 20 miles on a single charge just from the current produced by the altenator, maybe an amplifier, or transformer to increase the voltage and wattage to push the electric motor more. This guy is a genius. Makes me wanna do it to a car now.

Re: Electric Dsm

What is going to power the alternator? There are a few people that have made a dual mode car themselves. They take a small diesel engine and run a large alternator or 2 with it. The gas mileage is quite impressive when done correctly (70 mpg+). They still can't usually run infinitely, but the range is extended quite a bit.

Re: Electric Dsm

I would love to hear an argument against electric cars for 90% of driving americans. Do you ever wonder why gm released an electric production car in 1996 that had a range of 120 miles then cancel production in 2000 and 8 years later release another electric production car with a range of 40 miles?

And those who think an electric car can't throw down....

The electric motor on an overdrive pulley system. the parasitic loss wouldnt be that much. Or if you wanted to be all high tech about it you can rig it to activate with the braking system.

Why not rig it up to anything that spins, such as a cv shaft, or rig up a big fan blade off the front of the car and run a belt from that to an alternator, haha. Seriously there are plenty of things that spin on an already moving vehicle that somebody could tie into to spin it.

Re: Electric Dsm

You know what I just realized. Electric car drag races just dont have the same coolness to em that combustion engines do. Its just so quiet.

Re: Electric Dsm

The biggest issue right now in the persuit of the electric vehicle is the battery. Nobody wants to puchase a car with a $2000 battery pack and have it go out right away. Companies are throwing a lot of money at this as they are going to have to have a hell of a warranty to persuade customers.

I would argue against the safety holding them back as they have made hybrids since 2000 without any safety issues.

I personally will trust an import manufacturer when they bring out an all electric car (honda and toyota) as they have been at the drawing board for a bit longer and have success with their hybrids.

Re: Electric Dsm

I get that batteries and range are a challenge. But safety? What is dangerous about batteries and an electric motor that isn't already in modern cars? If it is in an available production platform the safety is already there.

I would think cold weather could be a problem here though.

Re: Electric Dsm

There is a safety aspect when comparing a car like the one this was originally about. The batteries he used are lead acid, they are heavy and of course have acid inside. One of these in your car isn't a big deal, throw 20 of them in and it becomes a bigger deal. There is the inertia you have to deal with in an accident, as 1600 lbs of batteries won't want to stop easily. Then you have the problem of them breaking open and spilling lots of battery acid if you are in an accident. That is part of the reason why you don't see lead acid batteries in production cars, they normally use lithium ion batteries. It is also a packaging and weight issue.

We are getting close to making this feasible, but are not quite there yet for a pure electric car. A dual mode like the Volt coming out is the closest we can get right now.
