stripped water line threads
I was installing my 14b last night on my 1g fwd. The bolt is in but not tight. I would asusme it would leak. Anyways, I stripped the coolant water line threads from the head? The bolt itself is not stripped? Any suggestions? Could I retap the hole the same size or I need to retap it lil bigger?

Re: stripped water line threads
There is no coolant line from the head, there is an oil line from the head and the coolant lines go to the big water line and the water neck. If it is the oil line on the head(left front top of head) then alot of people would say to take the head off and helicoil it. Me and a freind helicoiled his with the head on and had no problems.

Re: stripped water line threads
Pretty much you tap it a bigger size and the helicoil threads into. Then you can reuse the bolt because the helicoil make it the same size as it was(you need to find the right helicoil). End result the same size/pitch hole and helicoils are WAY stonger then aluminum.

Remember, that is a banjo bolt you are cranking on. Anytime I've ever re-installed one of those, it was old and weak and the head broke off. This might be what you are experiencing. A replacement banjo bolt from mitsu is like $10.

Re: stripped water line threads
If I plugged this up, is there another source where I can pull oil to the turbo?
I noticed there is another plugged right below the water coolant neck? It looks similar to the 2g oil spot? Could I used this instead????

wow, this is weird. We had this problem last night with Tauni's car. Does anyone have a helicoil we could borrow to fix hers?

Re: stripped water line threads
You can also pull oil from the oil filter housing, which is generally recommended, and makes install/removal easy as pie.

You don't borrow the helicoil. It is an insert that you tapped/screwed into the stripped thread.
That oil plug/bolt by the oil filter house is a PITA to take off. You will need allot of muscle to take it off. Is there another source I could use?

Re: stripped water line threads
I know what a helicoil is... but I thought you needed a special tool to actually install one? I realize there is a coil that must stay in there, but usually a helicoil kit comes with a whole bunch of it.

Re: stripped water line threads
Don't the 90 DSM have a different oil housing than the 91-94?

Re: stripped water line threads
A helicoil kit comes with the inserts and the tool to install them.

Re: stripped water line threads
is there an oil plug or something I could use for an oil source in a 90 housing? And if I could get a thread size so i can get a brass fitting that would help out too thanks guys. Trying to help Tauni get back on the road ASAP, and her car out of my garage.

Re: stripped water line threads
Just an FYI, if you do end up having to retap the hole make sure you don't use a fine thread. I can tell you from experience that it will strip very easy. Also PVT is amazing!
