Exclamation Door Handle!!

Having an issue with my door handle on my 98 GSX it just snapped and the outside door handle doesnt work anymore!!! I took the door panel off and saw that the rod that comes down from the handle to the part where the door opens was disconected... Im not sure if i would be able to just pop it back in or if i would need to take the whole thing apart or what. Anybody know what I should do or has anybody ran into the same prob?

Re: Door Handle!!

You probably need to take out the three bolts that hold the latch in to get the rod back in. I can't say for sure, considering I haven't had a 2g door apart in a while.

Its all so clustered in there that it would be hard to get in there... It just makes me frusterated looking at it.

But you think that if i take the three bolts off on the side of the door it could be reconected???

^^ I concur, that's usually how those door handles work. You usually have to unbolt the latch, hook the rod back on, and then bolt the the latch back. I guess because the fit is so tight?

Ya its really tight in there... I had the panel off but gave up after i ran out of things to do to fix it.. I dont wanna take the entire door apart just to get to the rod to connect it. Im not even sure how it would go back in.. i tried to pop it in but wouldnt go..

So if i take the three bolts off i could just pop it back in to place and its FIXED??

Re: Door Handle!!

That should work. That should give you enough room so that you could get it back together.

Re: Door Handle!!

When you take those bolts out, you should have enough room to move the latch assembly around to get the rod back where it belongs. Once again, I can't say for sure, it's been forever since I've had a 2g door apart, and I don't remember how close the window run channel is to the latch.

Re: Door Handle!!

There used to be a company in Waterloo, IA that made metal replacement door handles for 2Gs. I can't remember what their name is/was but the owner had an Avenger which he swapped in a 2G AWD drivetrain and 6 bolt.

I dont think I would go as far as replacing the handle if i can just reconnect the rod....
