Online Classes/Schooling

Well, I made the mistake of not going to college right after High School. 2 Years have gone by, now I want to do some extra schooling just to get something on paper. We all know that's what the boss looks at.

Well, does anyone have any experience with this Online Classes/Schooling? I am considering doing something through NAU (National American University). There's one 60 some odd miles away and I was considering going in under the Technology. IT

I don't really want to have to go to a campus and get a job for $6/hr. I'd rather buy a laptop, work full-time and do school work in the spare time I have at work, which is usually 3 hours a day. Then I'm done at 7pm and have nothing really important to do.

Yeah I know, some of you may think this is a white-trash thing to do or whatever, but I'm damn near 21, I don't want to be a Freshman at a campus! I'm not old, but I don't want to not work!

Would it be worth it or just keep the job I have, (I do IT right now at a little LLC.)

*Oh yeah and it's only an Associates.
11 weeks, 93 creds, 4.5 creds per class.

Online classes are nice but a 4.5 credit online class is alot. I had 4 different online classes that were 3 credits and that was alot of work. You say taht you will be able to keep up but it is hard to

Where was that from? This is from NAU, in SD. Out of state, but I don't know much about tuition, etc.

I would like to say I can keep up but shit, I don't know how this stuff works. I have a meeting on Friday, that's why I posted this.

Be very careful of places like that, it can be hard to transfer credits to a real 4 year college. Metroplitan State in St. Paul has a ton of online classes and are one of 9 state funded 4 year colleges in the state. www.metrostate.edu I am going there part time and my girlfriend started going there too after she got her 2 year degree. Check it out, only 124 credits to a 4 year degree.

Forgot to add that, the lady on the phone said they do transfer credits.

I am really considering this but I am having a hard time finding out if these degrees from this school are based on learning and experience or just paying for a piece of paper.

She sounded legit.

Ask the school for a list of alumni you can contact. Ask people that have gone through the program you are considering.

You could also check out DeVry. I'm in their Finance program and they have online options as well as two campus locations here in the cities (494/France & 394/169) Some online schools aren't accredited, and that is where a lot of your problems with transfer classes fall. Make sure it's an accredited school.

Even if a college is accredited, that doesn't mean anything. You best bet would be to contact a 4 year college and pretend you have the degree already and what would transfer in. NAU will not transfer in well, it is like the Globe School of Business up here and many others, they aren't real colleges. If you look in the "about us" section that is the first hint, the guy is the president and CEO. Colleges don't have CEO's.

Your best bet would be a local community college or one of the true online universities. One of the biggest is Phoenix University. It looks like Metro doesn't have a full IT program, but they do have a few computer related fields. I am not sure if they are available solely online though.

I just finished my last class at metro state last week. I liked that school alot and may go back for my masters next year. The evening and online classes were very convenient.

Devry has close to 60 campus across the US. If you want to get an associate degree, then a bachelors. Community college is the cheapest way and you can find out if the credits transfer to where ever you want to go.
A lot of community colleges of Online courses.
North Hennipen Community college offers online and are fairly good price.

It worked for me anyways.

im in the same boat, i love working on cars and im good at it, but i kinda want something to fall back on, besides ill be the only one in my family without at least a 4 year degree.

Thanks for diggin' that up JET. I don't think I will attend NAU then. I really want a strictly online degree/classes. I think I'm too late for anything now, I was originally checking out that DeVry that AJ noted, and the Phoenix one from the get-go, but heard a commercial on the radio for NAU.

I'm going to dig into DeVry more. I just want something to fall back on when I'm sick of working from the bottom up.

I have heard you have issues transfering with Devry also. I was at a seminar where the Dean of the University of Phoenix was a speaker. They adopted online classes way earlier than anyone else and are setting the standard right now.

Metro state has Computer Science, MIS, and other IT degrees, just look around there. I went for MIS.

I've looked around on transfering my credits out of DeVry is I ended up going that route and there was only going to be an issues with a few select course due to the program info being out of date or some shit. Otherwise it's pretty standard from what I've looked into.

I can say having that online option is a fuck'n blessing. I'm sitting back right now having a Jack-n-7 drink and doing my class work. I'm probably going to be tipsy for my final next week. lol

Yeah, online is great. My whole major from Metro is online. Gotta love it!
