Rebuilt S16G on, now smoke/hesitation/no BOV

Car is a 88 Mitsu Starion: S16G, 3" Hard intake with 1G mas+K&N, 2.5" exhaust w/ resonator only, intercooler hardpipes, Turbo XS-RFL, NGK plugs + wires, MSD coil.

Ok, so I bought a rebuilt S16G from a member on another forum. Rebuilt by trilogy turbos, which is well known 'shop' from that place. I finally get it on today, and go to start the car - seems OK, nothing leaking (that's all i was looking for). It's night and halfway outside my garage so I didn't look at the exhaust. If it matters, I put on a new SS braided oil feed too. Anyway, I take it out, decide to see what kinda effect it'll have on my car - so i get on it. Lags a TON, then if i go WOT or near that it sorta chokes onto power, but it hesitates bad. Also, my BOV never went off during the shifts or off throttle, and my gauge was showing about 14PSI.

Bring it to a gas station because something is obviouslly wrong. At this point i notice i'm putting out blueish-grey smoke from my exhaust. I'm thinking "oh great, new turbo has bad seals...AWESOME". Take it home without boosting and check a few things...

- Open the oil car, oil seperator at the VC, or oil seperator at the intake, and smokes comes out.
- Dipstick slighlty pushed up
- Pulled off the intercooling piping from the turbo-intercooler....no oil inside it.

Car ran perfect (other than idle problem when warm) before i swapped turbos. Old one was a stock 12A. Car still runs perfect OFF boost, other than the smoking. What the heck is going on? Bad seals on a rebuilt turbo, or something else?

When was the last time you ran the car? Were there other issues with it before?

Did you do a boost leak test after you got the turbo on? Might wanna try that.

Check for shaft play, oil in the inlet, etc. Does the turbo spin *freely* with just your fingers rotating it?

Last time I drove the car was a few hours before I swapped the turbo. Everything, other my idle hot-idle, was great.

Have not done a boost leak test, but it'd have to be IN the turbo for there to be one...hardpipes with new silicon couplers and SS clamps make leaks kinda hard to comeby. I don't have any money right now so I'm gonnna have to wait to build a boost leak detector

I plan on checking shaft play and whatnot today - it was too hot last night and i was pissed. However, i checked it before i put it on and it was perfect and spun good.

Well checked the shaft play - It's fucked. Big play up/down and side to side.

So now I gotta get a rebuild, even though this one was a fresh rebuild already. Good times! /sarcasm.

How the hell does a rebuilt turbo die a minute or 2 after it's put on, basically the second it actually spools? Rebuilt wrong?

yup. and just because you have new hardpipes & couplers, don't assume that you don't have a boost leak. You could have a huge one & wouldn't know it.

I see what you're sayin but it wasn't the cause of the turbo problems. Took the POS off and put my stocker back on and everything is kosher.

Not priming the turbo first?

Maybe it wasn't balanced right when it was rebuilt?
