timing belt question

hey guys...im putting on a new timing belt right....i cant get the marks to stay lined up......they all line up nicely with the belt "loose"...when i set the tensioner pulley it puts the crank marking off about a tooth clockwise....so i called my friend (sleepydsm) and he told me that it should all line up after i have the tension set....so i thought it would be as easy as setting the crank pulley back one tooth so by time i got done tensioning it would be right on...well i did that and then when im done its off again but its off counter clockwise (the tensioner didn't take a full tooth of rotation out)! so whats the deal...is either situation acceptable?....is it possible i have a belt with 1 too many teath or something (different between years)!? haha i dunno....hoping this has happened to someone and ill get some more experienced minds in on the problem...

Re: timing belt question

Move the intake cam counter clockwise one tooth when it is loose, not the crank. So line the crank up correctly (don't forget the oil pump if you have balance shafts!) then put the exhaust cam a tad high and the intake a tad low. It should come out good then.
