Question Front Cover - OIL seal installation question

Hi guys-

I have a question in regards to the 3 oil seals on the front cover. The front main seal butted all the way up against the aluminum surface. In otherwards, it went all the way down.

The other 2 oil seals however, did not go all the way down. It looks like they stop at a small lip a little ways up from the bottom. Is this correct? Is there suppose to be a little gap on the 2 smaller oil seals from the bottom?

Thanks for any info.

They should go all the way down. Make sure the seals aren't in backwards. You can use a socket just smaller than the outside of the seal to tap them down, it shouldn't take much.

Hi JET-

Thanks for the reply. It was for sure not in backwards. The little spring is towards the inside of the engine.

Here is a picture. I don't see how the oil seal will go past this little ledge.

Take a picture of the seal in. There should be a few slits in the seal where you can see the metal inside, those should go towards the outside of the engine.

Re: Front Cover - OIL seal installation question

Not a great pic but here is a pic of the underside of the oil seal. You see where it's open. Under the inner lip is a little spring that goes all the way around the circumfrence. The outter lip is what is butting up against that little ledge I was talking about. When the oil seal is pushed into the front cover with a socket, it's not sticking up at all. It sits just below the aluminum surface. I'm putting it in the right way, I was just wondering about how far it was supposed to go down.

I examined the book this morning and looked at the CAD print. It does look like they are showing the open space in there. It's not much, maybe 1/16+" I want to say it's suppose to bottom out at that little raised edge that you can see in my first pics.

Thanks.

Yeah, that must be all that it goes in. Your casting must have been pretty shallow.

Thanks JET. I'll put it back in and let it bottom out at that ledge. I removed it very carefully with an angle claw tip screwdriver. It's a brand new oil seal, I just removed the seal to show you pics.

I put engine RTV around the outside of the oil seal also.
