Question 2gen AWD tranny removal question...

Ok, probably not this weekend but maybe next weekend i'm pulling the tranny out of my 1999 GSX to replace some synchos and probably the clutch disk. I have my masters degree in removing 2g FWD trannys from when i had my GST but the AWD is all new to me. Can some one please tell me if i can remove the tranny without having to take the transfer case out. Basically, i just wanna know if i can leave the transfer case connected to the drive shaft and left in its natural position, remove the transfer case-to-tranny bolts and just yank the tranny out. If i can, do i need to prop it up or hang it somehow? Or is it already hung from brackets and stuff?

Thanks in advance....

The transfer case has to come off to clear the flywheel. The flywheel would hit and stop at the transfer case.

The transfer case will slide off the end of the driveshaft. Nothing else holds it in. Just take it off. Have something to catch the fluid.

Pulling the t-case is easy. I usually find a block of wood to rest the driveshaft on. Note that in most situations, you will need to drop the down pipe to gain access to the t-case.

BTW, I can drop a tranny fairly quickly out of a 2g AWD but putting it back in has always been a struggle for me.

I am with Jim. I can take them off no problem but putting them in is the bitch. You will have to disconnect or possibly remove the downpipe. Take out the 5 bolts that hold the t-case to the tranny and pry it off. The driveshaft will slide right out as mentined above. It is an easy part of the removal.
