Ag Leader makes yield monitors for inside the cabs of combines along with electronic systems for precision farming. Precision farming is basically instead of a producer spreading an even blanket of fertilizer, herbicide, insecticide....etc on a field, they have soil samples taken in numerous locations across a field and have a lab roughly determine the nutrient needs for those specific locations. When the soil samples are taken their location is recorded into database via GPS coordinates. Now where Ag Leader comes in is that the precision farming system they make takes those nutrient needs determined from the soil samples and then plugs in to the computer system of a fertilizer spreader or chemical applicator, and uses the the GPS coordinates of the different soils areas to determine which areas receive certain amounts of fertilizer/chemical: variable application. Then in the Fall the yield monitor in the combine records what actual yields are produced across the different areas in the field and then by analyzing which areas produced certain yields along with looking at the initial nutrient need predictions and what amounts of nutrients were applied, a farmer can put togther a fairly accurate prediction of what nutrients will need to be applied the next year.
Down the road a farmer can save a large amount of money because he/she is not applying fertilizer/chemicals where they are not needed and in turn adding higher amounts where they are needed more. Granted systems like this are not really geared towards the smaller producers because of the large setup costs: can easily exceed $10,000, but for the larger producers out there systems like this work great.
