What do you think of the g4cs

Hi, I've been in the DSM game now for about 3 years. First i cracked a piston after i was tuned for e85 on my first motor about 7 months or so ago. I love my car and felt it was necessary to build a 6 bolt 4g63. I ended up doing the wiseco/eagle combo with acl tri metal bearings and and everything else done as well.

To get back to the point of why i want to know info. about the g4cs is because my motor spun number 4 rod bearing after 2500 miles. Everything ran amazing up until then also. No problems what so ever.

I found a g4cs at a local junk yard and what i was planning on doing is to take that block and use that with my 2g head that i was already using on my 6 bolt build.

I do know that the stock rods on the g4cs only hold around 350 wheel so is that about the limit on the motor? I have two cars both currently down and i think it would be the best route to build this motor until it blows or any other suggestions anyone has would be great. Thanks........and money is kind of limited until I get another job

4GCS is the beloved 6-bolt 2.4L block/crank that everyone loves. I'd give a call to one of our sponsor shops to confirm, order up some parts, get the thing machined and assembled, then get it in the car!

Re: What do you think of the g4cs

I've build 3 of these in the last few years. Had Gosh do the machining / balancing, and used basic eagle rods / wiseco setup.

Amazing engine... it will survive nearly anything you throw at it.

I have heard over the years (but never verified) that some of them had cast cranks instead of forged? I was told that if you rapped a peen against the crank the forged ones would "ring" and the case would "thud". Sounds like complete forum hogwash, however.

Re: What do you think of the g4cs

How did you do the timing on the motor. I have read you have to get the 94 galant dohc cam gears and the 4g64 timing belt. Also some people have used there old 4g63 Kevlar belt with the 4g63 cam gears but turned them a half cog off. What did you do to set the timing?

If you go that route, get aftermarket cams.

I have HKS 272/272 cams that I am running. Did you mean adjustable cam gears?

I run one. Like you said, you just use cam gears/belt from a 94 galant, eazy peezy.

You might have spun a bearing because you were using some thin oil.

Read this and absorb: http://store.forcedperformance.net/m...otor%20Oil.pdf

I meant aftermarket cams. I didn't know you had 272's because a mod list wasn't listed. Stock cams suck with that block. I had it in my old car.

If you're gong the aftermarket cam gear route I have a pair of unorthodox cam gears if you're interested. They're not necessary but if you're a neat freak like I am they won't hurt.

Re: What do you think of the g4cs

I was using rotella 15w 40 when the bearing spun. Had under 1k miles on the oil when the rod spun.

And how much where you looking to get for the adj. cam gears that you have.

I know i don't have a mod list but i do have most the part pics on my fb page if anyone cares to look

Re: What do you think of the g4cs

If your on a budget why not buy one new eagle rod and a crank with bearings and fix what you have?

Re: What do you think of the g4cs

You can reuse your Eagle rods on your 2.4 build and unless you're building a drag car, I'd do the stock 2.4 cam gears and belt and not mess with degreed cams, especially with HKS's since they install straight up. With a 2G head and a good turbo, you'll have a V8 torque curve and awesome streetability.

Re: What do you think of the g4cs

I would just buy another Eagle rod and crank but i cannot find a 6 bolt crank. Then i would need new bearings and new piston rings, and hone the block. When i can get a running engine for 200 and put my head on it and get a new hg and call it good.

You will find out why you shouldnt just slap a HG and head on it and "call it good" later if you dont want to take peoples advise. you will get out of what you put into it just remember that.

Dude you have what looks like a pretty nice setup going there! You need to start a project thread and bring us up to speed, very nice.
