Early 90's Jap Cars.

I've been looking at early 90's japanese sports cars. IE

FD RX7s

NSX

300zx

Poopras, for a genuine manual turbo, are too overpriced.

FDs: Rotarys are neat, I never see one making more than 400hp and some monster turbo. Apex seals blow (literally, lol) and I'm not a huge fan. Sexy Cars

NSX: I know little, except all alum body, great handling chassis. How shitty are these to work on, mod, make power, etc?

300ZX. I've never seen a fast one in my life, engine bay looks ridiculously cramped and crowded. I think there was a guy who was doing a big single (cool) but I never saw the results. I've heard for any medium and up type work the engine needs to come out.

Can people please chime in on these cars? I'm honestly interested in the NSX mostly. Maybe Mo can talk about the pros and cons, and what it takes to make power?

NSX would be pimp-sauce. My friend had a 93 Rx7 TT Touring Edition. The car was a blast to drive...only issue was that I was sure the turbo's were on their way out and so was the apex seals because 1st gear, it was quite ferocious but after 1st, nothing, 2nd- nothing, once you got to third, it wouldn't even rev. If any of you guys remember a Black RX7 running 17s at RF about 2-3 years ago, that was my friends. If I remember correctly, those turbos were crap and the JDM Efini twin turbos were upgrades. I guess you can say going from a stock t25 to the e316g would be a nice comparison. I personally think it's hard to find a FD that has not been molested and has been babied in the correct price range.
The FD my friend bought at 45k miles on it. He went from owning a Honda Prelude without much knowledge of his car to a Rotary, twin turbo-charged car. By the time it was sold, we had our fun. The car felt very nice as a sports car through winding roads but his car just disappointed us because of how weak it was and how un-maintained he kept it. Oh yeah, did I mention he put f-ing 'lambo doors' on his? That FD was a wreck but man was it fun to drive. I only wished the engine was at 100% and not at 10%.

I've had rotary Rx-7s before (2)... There so powerless, but rev so hard... In the end, I put a built 350 SBC in it and used mounts from grannysspeedshop.com and was fast for cheap

I'd say do the 300zx, I've seen some quick ones with minor work and they are really nice inside. I got to see a few quick ones in TX, some of the guys down there were talking about motor swaps with that shell too. Might be something to look into.

NSX would be sick, if you can get a newer one I know i ran one a few years ago and we were pretty even, his was stock and I was running steady 11.9@119.

FD is my dream car, but I don't want anyone to have one, at least anyone i know.

I don't think I'd want an FD unless it had a LSx in it. 300ZX's aren't bad, in fact I know of one that's decent in the $7000 range, under 100k miles. Poopras are way too expensive. NSX's would easily be my first choice, in fact I looked for one for a year, couldn't find the right one and bought a Lotus instead. They are a lot of car for the money, but if you want a real street pounder, that wouldn't be my first choice.

I was in the same boat not too long ago.

I love how FD's look, but would want a different motor in there (LSx). My issue was going to be the cost of swapping an LS motor in there, just wasn't interested in that big of a project personally. If I could have found one already swapped for a decent price I would have really considered it.

Poopra, way to expensive. That's why I ended up with the less expensive old man woodgrain version

300zx. Looked at these also, but ended up not liking the engine bat situation. Seemed incredibly cramped.

NSX. I'm a cheap arse so that wasn't even an option for me.

Good luck searching man. I pondered this for months before finally settling on the SC300's.

That's not possible. Either your car was down about 150whp, or his car wasn't stock. Stock NSXs are about as slow as stock Evo's.

^It was an 05 newer style?
That was during the year I have no doubt that my car was running fine, unless it was when the 280s were in there, but i don't think so.
