When oil pump leak!

Well my oil pump was leaking out of oil pump gear on the timing belt side. Has any one seen this before. Because it looks like the oil pump gear was rubbing on the inside of the case and it looks like the oil pump case cover needs a gasket. Both balance shafts have been removed and there is a stub shaft on the upper oil pump gear. When I put together the new oil pump the gear's are hard to turn. But when I loosen the nut's just a little it spins good no drag. This came off and motor with 2000 miles on it. Here are some pics

You need a new front cover and oil pump assemble. What you have is junk, sorry. What did this come out of? What all was done to your car?

That is a good amount of damage for only 2000miles. I would pack the new pump with assembly lube and torque the cover to spec.

+1 on toss that and start over. Stub shaft setup? Run a balance shaft to keep the pump from "turning" in there and make sure everything is torqued to spec.

Also, there is no gasket used between the pump cover and the case. I thought the same thing when i did mine, but after doing a little reading there is nothing in the manuals about a gasket or any sealant to use. Never had any problems.

Re: When oil pump leak!

Looks like there might be alot of slop in the diameters of the oil pump case, which with that stubby shaft would cause alot more problems. I run that stubby shaft in my car without any gasket on the rear oil pump cover without any issues.

Re: When oil pump leak!

I had this happen on my 6 bolt. I think the oil pump that it happened on was a topline or something though.

Not using the 1.8 OEM stub shaft with the oiling groove can lead to failures too. Some aftermarket shafts don't have that groove causing issues.

Make sure to not skimp out on this part and buy from the dealer. It is a little chunk of $ but get all of the parts and start fresh. I had to do it and it sucked buying all of the new parts but now I know that it will not be an issue.
