My project= 1992 tsi
So I went to check out Steve's (goat blower's aka goodbye) 1992 talon for sale. Was alright with the price, took it for a quick spin, and liked it. So, I bought the car, had things squared away with Steve, and took her up to the gas station to get filled up. Put some premium in there to thin out whatever old gas was still in the tank, and headed on my way....
Now you might be asking yourself, how is this a project? First off, it will become my little project, and a problem arrose as I was heading home. As I was heading home, a very loud (that's no exaggeration) knocking sound started coming from the front end (engine bay area). I headed back, Steve and I started checking it out, making sure that everything was buttoned up and nothing was loose and rattling around. We spent an hour or so out in the cold, and got nowhere. We couldn't figure it out.
So, now I am in in a predicament. I will try my best to describe the noise, Steve, Jesse from primo, and myself have all heard it. It doesn't sound like a rod knock, it's not a constant knock. It seems to be making noise from the backside of the motor, on the very bottom. All of the lifters were there, there didn't seem to be anything loose in the timing, and it seems to be loudest when you let off the gas. It makes a noise when accelerating, but it's not as loud as when decceleration occurs, and there is some vibration in the steering. NO NOISE AT IDLE, runs smooth at idle.
Would like to hear from you guys, to see if you have any idea what the deal is. Steve, being the good guy he is, is gonna throw it on the lift and make sure the timing stuff he just did is correct, and look around and see if he can see if anything externally is messed up.
Thanks in advance.
edit: By the way, the car is a 1992 Talon TSI, All-wheel drive, and 5-speed.... I am now starting to think it's in the rear drive shaft (transfer case?), that would explain the vibration, and kind of explain the more violent noise in deccel....but idk, I'm just guessing.

Re: My project= 1992 tsi
Might just be the carrier bearing, they are known to rip the rubber around the bearing and create a thump, especially on decel. It could also be something in the flywheel/clutch combo.

Re: My project= 1992 tsi
I hope its a carrier bearing, that's like $100 to buy one.... I didn't feel anything when pressing the clutch down, the noise would get loud, then as it came back to idle, and its not moving, the noise goes away.
btw:just talked got the title from steve, he's gonna take a look at it tomorrow, and will check the carrier bearing and transfer case out. Hopefully this will be an easy fix.

Re: My project= 1992 tsi
So it only makes the noise while driving? If looking at the engine, and rev the motor by hand with the throttle body it doesn't make any noise?

Yes when we rev the engine under the hood, out of gear, it still makes the noise. But no noise at idle, either way.

Hmm, to me that would rule out the t-case or driveshaft. Hopefully it's nothing too serious.

Re: My project= 1992 tsi
Yea he's been really helpful through the whole ordeal. I'm now pretty much positive that its in the driveline, now just to find out where. I'd rather put in a new driveline piece then putting a engine in. Scared the crap out of me, litterally put 2-5 miles on it before it made the noises...

Maybe a throw out bearing taking a shit? Where in Roseville are you? Primo, where most of my DSM friends locally end up going for fun, is right in New Brighton.

Re: My project= 1992 tsi
I'll will get pics up when I get it back.
First things first, I'm gonna head to the junk yard and get a couple new pieces. Try to find some burgandy body pieces to replace the not so nice ones, just clean it up.
As for future mods, I am a bit undecieded. Would like to do the basics, fmic, maf-t, maybe suspension (get rid of the lifted look...lol). Just gonna clean it up a bit, leave it kinda stock (but thats what they all say.

Re: My project= 1992 tsi
As of right now, I am not to worried about mods. It's got a e3 16g, 2g mani, k&n, turbo xs boost controller, and thats pretty much it. It does not have the balance shafts removed. Mods will come with time, I still gotta do some reading, and see what direction I want to go in. E-85 has always sparked my intrest, but I think thats a little further down the road.
