My new beat-up project 92 AWD TSi

I have my work cut out for me here, guys. Picked up a 92 AWD TSi about a month and a half ago, have since then been gathering parts and plenty of users here have been very helpful.

Let the truth be known to everyone, and I'm not embarrassed at all, I know absolutely nothing about performance upgrades. Right now I'm trying to get it up to stock which is hard enough, since it's my first ever fixerupper/project car. Any help/suggestions would be appreciated greatly, and I wouldn't even mind if anyone came to turn a wrench or two to help me out!

Now to the car, it's kind of a pile. But that's why I bought it, to expand my experience in fixing and upgrading cars. To the best of my knowledge; the synchro is out in first and it's kind of rough getting into other gears, I have to start out in second every time since first is definitely more miss than hit. The turbo has shaft play and is leaking oil into the intake so that's lovely. Recently learned a crack timing belt too, and then a bunch of random small things I won't waste your time with.

Here's an album of when I first brought it home: http://imgur.com/a/bENTT

It's kind of clean for a 92, minimal rust underneath, just a couple spots on the body, but a rather shotty rattle can black paint job over the purple it was before.

Any advice, tips, help would be gratefully appreciated, I don't know much about cars when it comes down to fixing them the right way, and i'm gonna need all the help I can get!

Welcome! With some elbow grease and time that should make for a nice project.

Have you had time to check the compression?

Yup! I've bought a few parts from 99gsxjoel and he's a really awesome dude, offered to give me a compression test when I mentioned I didn't have a compression tester myself. Good compression all around.

I'm putting in my new transmission this friday, and seeing as it's the first transmission I've ever replaced; I was looking to as a favor of anyone willing. i may need some help, to make sure I don't screw anything up, I live in Cambridge but my garage is tiny and if anyone is willing to let me use their garage that'd be amazing.

If you have the money you should get a new clutch fork and pivot ball along with a new throw out bearing.

If I'm not working overtime or otherwise busy I can help out.

Re: My new beat-up project 92 AWD TSi

Hey guys I need some SERIOUS HELP! I'm replacing my tranny and clutch today and it is immensely over my head, if anyone's willing to help out I live in Cambridge. I'll throw burgers on the grill, start a fire, and hang out to try and have a good time I just don't see myself doing it alone and not fucking something up. If anyone is up for it please text or call me at 763-607-5483, it'd be greatly appreciated!

Good luck with it. I can say right away, that burgers and fire won't be enough to get someone do your clutch job, especially on 1g awd. I pay my friend $50/hour to do it, and even then I feel like he is being underpaid. It is a bloody mess.

It's not that bad, If ya got air tools, took me 3hrs to do my first one start to finish by myself. Theres plenty of write ups on how to do it on tuners you can look at if ya get stuck on something. Good luck .

I may have to take you up on that offer sometime! Cause my lack of people with know-how available made my tranny not possible to do this weekend. :/
