My father has befallen some serious medical problems that I don't care to discuss in public, but I need to sell my car, and get something cheap to insure and maintain, as well as drive. I will be helping support my mother and sister, as my dad is the main breadwinner of the family, and will probably spend a great deal of time in the hospital for a while. They helped me through college, and now I need to pay them back. So I need to know if anyone wants a 2003 Mitsu Eclipse, and any ideas of a reliable source of transportation. I was thinking of a minivan. Seriously. 1999 Dodge Grand Caravan ES AWD. Fuck me. This sucks :razz2:
Any ideas or suggestions would be welcome. Try to keep the Bullshit to a minimum. :headache:

Sorry to hear that, best wishes to you and your family. :grouphug:
As far as cheap, reliable transportation goes, it's hard to beat a Toyota pick-up, they seem to run for ever. Good fuel economy too. Or you could stay close to the DSM family and get one of those 4g64 Sonata's, I'm sure they are really cheap, and it still gives you something you can tweak on. But you also want reliability, so maybe it's not a good idea :P .

Best wishes to you & the family Kiel
For a car, I have gotten to be a big fan of the older S-10s. Back at home we have an '83 S-10 that is basically the beater. It is not umcommon for it to sit for a couple of months but it has yet to let us down. The 'ole S-10 starts better than any other vehicle my family owns when it gets cold and shitty. As for selling your car, like I suggested a while back, advertise it down around SE MN, NE IA, and SW WI.

My prayers are with you Kiel. I have met his family and they are a, to say the least, very nice, warm, and welcomming family.
I will keep my eye's open for ya bud!

Take it from a minivan abuser, the awds are definitely not the best, they are alright if you need them <ie you live in the country> otherwise the old (94ish) 3.8l V6 have decent power and fuel economy the 2001 or 2002 have a different transmission which is the main problem with any of the other ones.
When looking for used you WILL want one with a replaced tranny still under warranty, but NOT recently replaced as they usaually have a few problems right after replacing. PM if you have any questions, Im always willing to help.

i hope everything turns out good for your family.
I was in same/similar situation about 2 years ago exactly, found out my father had cancer and that he had no more than 6 months.. they were right on the button. he died 5 1/2 months later.
i had to fill in the big shoes and it is tough, very very tough, this is my second year filling instead of my father and i can't tell you how many times i've lacked his support.
What i would suggest is to try to spend as much time with him as possible and with your family. If you are not already living with them, move back in and stay with them. That will mean A LOT to him seing that you are stepping up to the plate!!!
Im still learning as i go, but i hope you do not end up following my footsteps and i hope your father recovers quickly and fully!!!
Best wishes!
-Enes

Oh man, that really sucks. I really hope everything turns out alright in the end.
If you're thinking minivan, I have an 89 turbo in my driveway. Cheap. It's not AWD. : / The insurance on them is supposed to be dirt cheap too.
Good luck with whatever you need to do--selling the car you love is pretty rough.

1) Thank you so much for all of your support. I will need it.
2) I don't love my car, I just have to scrap all plans to buy the EVO I've been scrimping and saving for. It was gonna have a sunroof :razz2:
3) Turbo minivan?? Sounds cool enough... Where do I find one.
We will still be hosting the Preston Trout Days group, and maybe I'll still have my car then, cause I can't imagine being able to sell a 3g in the dead of winter (let alone at all)
I was thinking about buying a shitter of a van, then buying Joe H's 92 6bolt/4bolt 92 TSi. We'll see. I wouldn't insure the TSi, just rent a dolly and trailer it around. Funny thing, I'll have both a faster and more reliable car, and they won't be the same vehicle, and I'll STILL be saving money hand over fist from that money magnet death trap 3g.
So once again, thank you.
My dad is going in for some extensive testing in March on his heart. 3 or 4 things, including family inheritance of problems, have lead to a huge shit load of problems (Anyeurism, leaky valves) and he's only 52. If he needs the surgery which we think he may, we're talking $150,000 +, hopefully most covered on insurance. But we keep truckin, he is a pastor after all... But I do appreciate all the support, and I'll keep you posted.

DAMN JDM, that really sucks! I know how it is to have a parent befall a serious medical problem. I still remember when my Mom was diagnoist with COPD, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. I wish you and your family the best of luck. If you need anything just get a hold of me.

I'm sorry to hear that. That's absolutely terrible...
My father's doctor said he has the heart of an 80 yr old man. He could live 40 more years, or he could die tomorrow if the anyeurism ruptures. It's all a big waiting game I guess. At least he's still young with everything else, and will take well to the complications brought on by surgery.
And where do you get all of those Emoticons... Like the cumshot and the group of smileys?

Best wishes to you family, hopefully your father will have a speedy recovery after surgery. (and hopefully insurance will cover it for you).
As far as sports cars goes, my stealth hasn't let me down for reliability, the only problem is if/when it breaks parts are spendy.
Escorts (older ones) have always been consitered cheap beaters.
Early 90's hondas run forever (or until the rust apart).
99% of the cars stay reliable if you keep your hands off them, the stealth is barely modified, and i am not nice on cars, but it still holds together nicely. I think a 1g dsm with proper maintence and being left stock is okay, but will probably grenade after a while.
the early 90's caravans are good beaters as well, my dad drove one for months on end as a construction vehicle, poor van's suspension was flatened . It finally cracked a head and meet...the crusher.
Best of luck, things always work out for the better in the end.
