Motor build
I was just wondering Im start to look for a 2.4 block for my build where is a cheap place to get these blocks and what cars came with them. Also I can use a 7 bolt head right? Im planning on having LSE build it for me. So I guess another question would be do they build this combo. Im looking to get 450 to the wheels. Also what are the benefits of a 2.4 over a 2.0 besides the displacement or would it just be better or more reliable to go with a 2.0 6 bolt. Thanks in advance Nick

Re: Motor build
Honestly, if you must ask, then don't do it.
The 2.4 is a bit more torquey, and works to spool a larger turbo quicker (Or break the little guys-14b's. Just ask kevin-santa) The block itself came from a mitsubishi expo minivan. I think the engine block says g4cs er sumthing like that.
Reliability won't be anymore of an issue with the 2.4 as it is with the 2.0.
Yes, I am sure LSE, MAPerformance, and DB Performance can build ya the motor, even with a 7 bolt head.
for your power output, I honestly would look at the 2.0, with a fresh rebuild, even with stock parts. You can save soo much money, by using those parts, and spending the money elsewhere, like on cams, smim, turbo, etc.
What many DO NOT understand is the fact you all think that the motor must be built to make power. A DSM was raced for a full season with a STOCK shortblock, stock head, with the exception of cams and headstuds. made 585whp-ish. The motor is more then willing to take the 450 you wish to throw at it. Take the 3 grand you'd spend on the motor, get a larger turbo, and other supporting mods, and make the power just as reliably on your stock bottom end, as you could with it built and stroked.

Re: Motor build
If I were you and my goals were 450whp, I would be using a stock 6 bolt. I am hoping to get 500whp out of my 2g fwd with a stock 6 bolt block and built head but we'll see what happens. A 7 bolt head would work, but the head bolt holes would need to be drilled bigger to get the head studs through the holes on the 7 bolt head.

Re: Motor build
A 2.4 will get you ~20 more whp, ~30 more ft/lbs of torque and a ~400 earlier spoolup on a bigger turbo. I don't know how much it will help on a smaller turbo, I wouldn't even bother.

Re: Motor build
It will be too much for a smaller turbo. Anyone notice why kevin keeps going through 14bs? I'm getting ready to fricken donate my 61 to the poor guy!

Re: Motor build
Steve's pretty much right on the money. And, I'll say it before nutty does, but if you get a 2.4l, don't fuck around and waste your time. 3575 would be the SMALLEST turbo i'd put on it. get a dnp t4 mani, with a pte T74. Then, with a new fuel system, EMS, 1600cc injectors, 100 shot to spool quicker, you will be knocking on the doors of things you didn't imagine was that reachable. shoot higher man. ANYTHING is streetable. Ya just gotta wait for it to come on, when you apply the gas.

Re: Motor build
Yes we can build a motor, ither the basic eagle/wiseco piston combo, or somthing realy crazy, call the shop and we can talk about it. The 2.4 can make more power then a 2.0 but the setup needs to be right in order for it all to work together, that goes for any build/performance upgrade.

Re: Motor build
If you are looking for a block, try this:
http://car-part.com/
The "preferred" 2.4L block is a g4cs block from an 89-91 sonata. You should be able to find a low mile engine for cheap. The actual build is not much different or more expensive than a 4g63 build.
The biggest difference that I noticed from swapping to a 2.4 was increased driveability. My car was already very streetable but the extra torque made it more enjoyable to drive.

Re: Motor build
Oh, and definately go with a large turbo. My 50 trim is awsome on the street but my car needs a new turbo.

Re: Motor build
A friend of mine has a fully built 2.4l 6-bolt short block for sale that has never been used. He will probably let it go for a fair amount less than it would cost to build another one.

Re: Motor build
So there is a difference between a "G4CS" and "4G64" stamped block? And why is the apparently different G4CS "better"?

The g4cs 6 bolt found in hyundia's. The 4g64 is a 6 or 7 bolt that is found in galants (I'm not sure of years on the 6 and 7 bolt 4g64's). Both blocks where manufactured by mitsubishi. The only difference is that the g4cs has a threaded boss that accepts a knock sensor. I have no direct experience with the 4g64 blocks, but I have heard that they do not have a threaded boss in the same location. I've even heard that some 4g64's require plugging of coolant passages. Again, I have no experience with 4g64's but my g4cs went flawlessly.
Basically, it sounds like there are less possible headaches with a g4cs.

Re: Motor build
Not much of a difference. One thing, the G4CS was not manufactured by Mitsu, it was manufactured by Hyundai. Mitsu provided the dies to build it, but there is a little concern of the materials used in the Hyundai and if the tolerances were as tight.
That said, I have a G4CS in my car also. There was literally no modification to the block.

Not true, my g4cs did not have the knock sensor boss, I had to use another boss down closer to the a/c bracket. See below.

Re: Motor build
Vicious, yes everyone just mounts the knock sensor in that other hole, it goes right in.
Search for a engine block, 98gsx.

Re: Motor build
1ViciousGSX, that is the location I am talking about. The 4g64 does not have that boss (so I've been told). My knock sensor works fine in that location.
