Went to Rock Falls today 6/10

Well it was my first time out this year. Was looking to get my first 11 sec. run but it didn't happen. My first run of the day was the best. I was very impressed with the 60' times. Lots of 1.6's and some low 1.7's. I had just got some some Z rated Wanli S1088 tires off ebay for $200/set to go on my 17" stock GSX wheels instead of running my heavy 19's like last year. I was skeptical about them but couldn't believe my very best 60'. No other changes since last year except for the 17" wheels and ran VP C14 fuel. I was running about 11.5 to 11.7 on the wideband.

My first and best run of the day:

60' 1.642
330 4.972
1/8 7.734
MPH 93.06
1000' 10.114
1/4 12.107
MPH 114.75

My problems started from the get-go. I didn't think i knocked at all on the first run but it was quite a bit (3* to 4.5*) so it was hidden in with the other lines in the dsmlink log (STUPID ME!). So I cranked the boost slightly and added about 2 more deg. of timing. Ended up having to let off mid track due to the bad knock. I surely caught it this time. So by the end of the day I was about -6* around (7-8k rpms) of timing and was still knocking some! I was disgusted at having to reduce the timing that much. Last year with almost the same setup, I was running +3 of timing at almost the same amount of boost and could have went more.

The only difference today is that I was running VP C14 fuel (1 year old). Last year I had Traktek TT114(formerly known as Phillips B33) fuel. I don't know if the difference this year is the aged VP C14 or that C14 just plain sucks! I'm gonna have to go back to TT114 without any other changes to see if it is a fuel issue. Anyone else ever have problems with C14????

Best time last year was 12.05 @ 116.7

old fuel will definatly make a difference. I have heard from other people that it oxidates over time, and becomes "weak". I could be wrong on this fact, so someone please correct me If I am wrong (It was explained by my uncle, but I forget). I do know that year old gas is yucky. try new, better gas and do a pull before you start to tear into it more. that just may be the ticket to your problems.

Agreed. I would be curious to know what the octane rating of it is after sitting for a year in a 55gal drum that was previously opened. I can get TT114 locally. It's expensive at $12 gallon (purchased in a 5gallon can) and C16 is about the same here. Somewhere around $9 something if purchased in a 55. Next Saturday is a test tune day at Rock. I might goto that or just go on Sunday to the bracket race. I might Google around tonight to see if there is any info on the affect of age to race gas.

I would deffinetly stop running that old gas. Gas starts losing it's octane within a couple of months. If you keep running that old gas you're going to fuck up your fuel system. Old gas leaves some nasty deposits.

I'd drain the tank and run some new gas with a couple bottles of fuel system cleaner.

Yep, I'm giving the remainder of the gas back to Dad. It's fine for his car, not mine though. You know, I changed the plugs after the first few runs to some new 7's. On the plugs I took out, the white ceramic part of the spark plug was a pretty good yellow. C14 is yellow but good C14 might not leave those yellow deposits whereas the old stuff does.
