Hello From Rosemount MN

Hello All!!!!

My name is Andrew and I am a DSM addict

People: "Hi Andrew"

For my Bio
I am a college kid at the U of M in St paul and Minneapolis going into Landscape Architecture. It is a fun career.

I have been a fan of DSM cars for a while and I accually didn't know that this website and club accually existed untill now. It is great that there is a club around here.

For my car:

My car is nothing special though compared to your guys GSXs and GSTs (i see many people own those) My car happens to be a 1993 GS Mitsubishi Eclipse N/A which has been great to drive as a daily driver. I bought it a couple years ago when my dsm knowlage wasn't as good. Little did i know at that time that they are a very popular car.

However (and this is why I accually found the website) My car accually is introuble and I am hoping you guys could help me out with any info and opinions that you can. My car just spitted out its timing belt on the engine and will need a complete rebuild. I am now in the process of taking out the engine and transmission. I almost got them out today but I had to quit because I went out to dinner with my parents.

There are pictures below showing the progress. It may look like a mess however it is pretty organized.
Also for people currious of whats that inback of the half shafts it is a S-10 with a Chevy V8 350 in the process of building up. So I like imports and american muscle

So now is the point where i ask, what should I do with the car now? It is in good condition, it is an out of state car so the rust factor has been minnimum. It does have it dings but nothing that can't be fix up.

What I want to do is put a turbo motor into it now and when I first came to this website, and remember this is when I was looking for what to do, i saw TkrPerformance car and that was inspirational. I emailed him and he helped me out some THANKS!!!! However I think I am going to need more help on this and i will post out my technical questions in the right spot in this web page.

But what do you think? Or should i just rebuild the motor in the car?

I have been going back and forth and trying to figure out what to do with it and it has been driving me crazy!
So any help or opinions that you have would be great!

I will keep everyone updated on this project with pictures.

And again Hello to all!!!

Andrew

Welcome to the site!

Well, since your car is a 93. Another option is to just go out and buy a real dsm.

N/A models are not really considered dsms. IF you have the knowledge and time with your car, you could turbo it. But its much easier if you go out and get talon tsi / gst or the gsx / tsi awd.

Hey welcome to the sight. I would recommend to go out and by an AWD to start with. You are going to hate wheel hop. To convert a non turbo to a turbo is going to take some money. So why not just start with a turbo one and upgrade later. This is just my 3 cents.

I'm with them. Sell what you have left, and go find a GSX. Or buy my conquest

Re: Hello From Rosemount MN

Ok so it looks like the majority say that i should go for a GSX and sell the GS. This doesn't sound like a bad idea. I always loved the GSX because of the all wheel drive! I don't know why they ever got rid of it... Well the EVO is very impressive though!

Well this is how my budget sits right now. I have 2500 saved up for car stuff right now, which I know doesn't sound like very much but hey, going to college is a big drain on the wallet plus working only part time till summer. I may wait to see if i can save up more.

My biggest problem right now is what do I do with this car right now then? Anyone want to make me an offer? (well I should put this in another forum) The body panels on it are rust free which makes me think that it would be a good donar for sheet metal. How much do you think it is worth? I am thinking i should take the parts and save them incase of anything. The engine block is good as well incase i need a donar, (however i have never heard anyone needing an engine block because they are bullet proof)

The other thing (and please again post your opinions on this) is that I need this as a daily driver. I have heard that the AWD are maintenance hogs.I would like to know how many people use theirs as daily drivers? I bet they are good in the snow!

I am a little worried that this is going to turn into another project car and i have been warned that i don't need another project. But hey how many chances in this world do we get to drive something like this and we only live once

Anyway thoughts?

Thanks again for your replies!!!!

Re: Hello From Rosemount MN

My gsx is my daily driver as its my only car. Nothing breaking and no maintenance except the usual clean up. Other than that, its mechanically sound. As for dsms in general being maintenance hogs, its more like. The more power you wanna make, the more it will break.

If you look around enough, you can find good gsx / tsi awd for cheap. My friend got one last year for $1500, and everything was in damn good shape except for the usual 1g rust spot in the fender.

Re: Hello From Rosemount MN

So just to keep up with the news of what I have been up too. Bought a cylinder head for the GS. Very happy about that. It is the turbo head so maybe i should get a little go out of it now

Here is the good news:

Because the project is taking so long I have been searching for another car. My dad recived a letter from his ralley group saying that there is a Eclipse GSX for sale. I am going to check it out this friday and if everything is ok with the car i will accually have a TRUE DSM. I am hoping brother is going to buy the GS but on the otherhand it isn't bad to have a spare eclipse laying around incase the other breaks.

Anyway I will keep everyone up to date. Friday this week will not come fast enough!!!

Re: Hello From Rosemount MN

Hello Everyone!!!!!

It is friday and I have very good news!!! I have now a 90 GSX in my driveway right now!! I am a owner of a awd turbo DSM. I am very very happy!! The car is pretty clean exept for a couple rust spots. The car isn't perfect just yet as well. There are three major things that need to be fixed on the car

First I think is the fuel pump because the car starts to sputter at higher rpm. Also when going up hill with the cruise control and the turbo is kicking in around 7psi (exept this is the factory boost guage which aren't reliable)
Included was a fuel filter NEEDS TO BE FIXED TRUE POWER NOT AVALIABLE

Second there is a constant squeeling sound in the front of the car. I think it could be the powersteering or the alternator. NEEDS TO BE FIXED ANNOYING

Third is the radio needs to be installed as well which this isn't a nessesity because I am liking the sound of a turbo spooling up!!!!

Other then that the car is in very good condition. The previous owners kept really good care of it and replaced a lot of parts even after they knew that they were going to sell it. They are very nice!!

I haven't ever seen a cleaner engine bay on a stock dsm as well.

here is a picture of it:

Re: Hello From Rosemount MN

Well just updating on my bio or on the bio of my car

The belt sound was getting really annoying so the mistake I did was take it into the shop.

I just wanted it to be done and fixed so I could drive it to school and back. Well the people over at the shop said kind of bluntly that they really don't work on the turbo Eclipses very much so they didn't know what to look for or to check to see if there was a boost leak. The squeel they said could be a number of things
(quick update i determined the fuel problem might be a boost leak that is giving me problems, if it was fuel cut, the check engine light would come on)
So they said they really don't know what to do and they think i have some valve clatter and said "here is your bill"

Lesson number 1 NEVER TAKE A DSM TO A PROFESSIONAL SHOP unless ofcourse it is a performance shop, or i guess if people have worked on these cars before.

So I decided to start eliminating belts, first one was the AC because it doesn't work. Clipped that belt and the squeek went away. DONE WITH THAT PROBLEM car is very enjoyable

The next thing I did was replace the fuel filter and the hesitating problem went away or so I think...
I kind of want someone that knows their DSMs to look at the car yet and see if there is anything that I am missing.

The radio is still a mess and i am not going to deal with that one for a while yet.

Re: Hello From Rosemount MN

I hope no one mind that I keep updating this, making a journal of my car.

SO i just got done replacing a good majority of my fluids. The oil filter was pretty stuck on there REALLY BAD (O the joys of buying a used car). It was so bad I put a dent in the oil filter trying to get it off. I got it though and put a heavy duty oil filter on though. I put Mobil 1 synthetic in there. It seems to work pretty good. The old stuff looked pretty black but I think that because it was recently changed to synthetic and was unclogging all the carbon deposits in the engine.
SO here is the good news. I found out the problems with the car and the hesitation. It was the spark plugs. The plugs in there were new however I now know that brand of plugs makes a difference. NGK are a bad brand (if it makes you guys feel better i wasn't the one that put them in there) and make your car run like poop and give you bad gas mileage, Autolite copper run very good and cheap but need to be replaced every 6000 miles. I can live with that though.

So I am very happy. The car is running strong, has good fluids, new plugs and wires, and good belts. This is a very good start.

So the next step is modifying the car SLOWLY. I am going to try to take my time at this and enjoy every minute of it. I could stick a lot of money all at one but whats the fun of that, plus i am broke.

Next though I would like to put a Boost guage on the car and start modifying the exaust.
I don't know if I want to buy a MBC yet because I will be too tempted to twist it and I want to get the exaust flowing nicely first. There are other ways of increasing boost without adding that yet.
