Re: un cut 6 bolt crank
DSM cranks have a hardened layer and that's why the FSM says they are not serviceable. Its a big debate, many shops also don't recommend it.

Re: un cut 6 bolt crank
It's the nitride coating. Cheaper to find a fresh on than have it re-nitrided.

Re: un cut 6 bolt crank
gotcha! Makes sense that they are case hardened, that would do a lot for wear resistance.

Re: un cut 6 bolt crank
I called crankshaft supply today and to service my crank, it will cost $366 plus me shipping and shipping back.
That includes filling the thrust bearing on crank, cutting and polishing the mains, also the nitrate coating. The nitrate coating is $168 alone.
The only reason why i might send them the crank is that it was balanced, I don't know if it will still be balanced after they work on it.
And i am still looking for a good used 6-bolt crankshaft.

Re: un cut 6 bolt crank
$366 isn't bad when comparing to the alternative. Eagle junk for $500ish or Manley for 6. Crankshaft supply is the beesneez around here. They don't carry any 4g cranks down there? Would almost think they would.
Good luck on the decision.

Re: un cut 6 bolt crank
Crankshaft Supply don't have any stock of 6 bolt cranks. I wish i knew of them sooner. I've trashed 3 cranks because they needed to be cut.
I also have a set of acl tri metals sitting in my garage, I'm thinking about going to aluminum. I haven't had the best luck with the tri metals.
Anyone with experience with aluminum bearings around 500 whp.

Re: un cut 6 bolt crank
You can cut 7 bolt cranks .010 and be fine, they are induction hardened and the hardening layer is .025-.030 deep, a 6 bolt crank is nitrided and that only goes .010-.015 deep so a basic .010 cut could remove the hardening off the journal.
