MN engineering firms

The college im going to has their students get jobs at engineering firms for every other quarter. For example the first quarter you study at school, and the next quarter you go work for an engineering firm to gain experience in the trade. The school is all the way in Michigan, so I would like to find a job here in MN so I can stay near my family and friends at least every 3 months. I havent been able to find any engineering firms locally, and since this is a car site im sure some of you would know of an engineering firm somewhere around here!! I should probably specify im going to study mechanical engineering so I need to find a job as a mechanical engineer.

if I dont find a job here, i will most likely work for GM or some other major corp in MI

Any help would be greatly apreciated!!!

Where exactly have you looked that has turned up zero results for you? I'm not even from Minnesota but came up with those companies off the top of my head. Does this school you are going to have any sort of Career Services office?

Kettering University, it usd to be called General Motors Institute (GMI).

To be honest, I havent really looked much, except for through listings of previous KU students jobs

we have a very large arms firm here that goes by the name of Alliant Techsystems. they have gotten huge in the last 6 years. http://www.atk.com/ <---their site

another super giant ass engineering firm is 3M of course, they hire every kind of engineer imaginable!

Boston Scientific is another one (monster medical device company)

i'm interested in what classes you have to take at your school. do you have to take the 3 years of calc/diff eq and 2 years of physics and all that other horrible shit too? i'm in my 3rd year of ME schooling as well, just curious.

Try Cummins Power Generation - it's engineering, assembly and manufacturing and a 9 billion dollar company - same size as Medtronic. Up in Fridley. Email me your resume - I'll try to help. Be specific about what you've done, courses and manufacturing knowledge. You've gotta be at least a sophomore. I'll be honest about a couple of points though -
1) For my own division - You'll need two things - a GPA of 4.0/4.0 and my engineers need to sign off that they want you. Then I can hire you.
2) If your GPA is less than 4.0, then I will put your resume in to the oither divisions with a note from me and they may/will call you depending on what they see in your resume and their own availability. Thats why I asked you to be specific.

I hope this helps you out. This is a direct route in and not a website deal where you're one of the many. And if you get the job, don't let me down dude - I'll be going out on a limb.

with all engineering programs, dont you need 3 years of calc, 1,2, multivarible and linear algebra? I know thats why I got out of it. even though im a freshman and taking multivarible, but i just dropped it a couple of days ago. figured it wasnt worth the time and effort if it was just going to be an elective.

Medtronic is a great place to get into, as well as Guidant. Both are huge medical companies. Are you looking for a paid position or just a internship? It sounded like you want a paid spot.

Nope.

I only have to take Calc 1, Calc 2, and Differential Equations w/o Leplaus(sp?) transforms.

I'm very surprised to see such a harsh GPA requirement. The engineering world used to hold themselves to such a high standard when it came to recruiting but has drastically altered that. When I was a freshman (F02), one just about always needed a 3.0/4.0 to find an internship. Now many companies have dropped that to 2.75/4.0. It's not all about the classroom, it's about how you can prove yourself. Too many times by holding to such a strict GPA requirement, the only applicants turn out to be book nerds that don't have a damn clue how to drill a hole or use a screwdriver, but yet are "engineers." To be quite honest, if a recruiter told me I had to have a 4.0/4.0 I wouldn't even waste my time with them. To me that shows irresponsibility on behalf of that given company's management.

i totally agree with jakey on that point. there are seniors here taking 500 level engineering courses like advanced internal combustion engine fundamentals (the prereqs for the course alone are insane) that cannot talk about engines in the real world for even 1 minute w/o getting very confused. give them a list of equations, SI units, and diagrams in a book and they can do it. try to talk to them about the 4banger in their accord and they just get lost.

i think the best engineer is a delicate balance between book nerd and self taught mechanic

Rk4g63 i really apreciate your offer, but im just looking around right now. Thanks very much though. I can email you my resume anyway, and well see what you can do with it. I havent even started school yet, but in HS i have already taken Calc 1 and Calc 2.

Jakey/notnormal, I totally agree with you guys but there are some HR rules that I cannot break. I can bend them a bit if the resume looks like there's some good stuff, but there's a limit. LOL!
Some of the stuff we do is state of teh art designing/machining/assembly, so the HR people like to think they can set high standards. Personally, I'd just interview a guy myself, then have my team interview him. If we all sign off, he's in. I cant pull it off all the time though.

I have yet to ever see an engineering internship/co-op which is unpaid. My guess is that the average salary range for engineering students on interships is in the $16-$20/hour mark. I am hoping to be in the $18-$20/hour mark this summer since I have two internships under my belt. Now for business and other non-engineering internships, it is much more common from them to be unpaid.

That's where I work. Definatly look into them. They have several offices and locations here in the cities and in 22 other states as well. They have an EXCELLENT student work study program and if by any reason you can get an actual job with them, they also love degrees and as long as it's going to help you help the company they pay 100%. Starting my next class, all of my shit will be paid for.
