I am in need of a transmission for my 1993 laser rs awd turbo 5-speed, I found a used JDM with between 30 and 40 K on it for 700 dollars shipped. That comes with the t-case. I have been having a hard time finding one in the states for less than 750 dollars shipped with 70 K on it. Are JDM trannies better than our stock ones or the same. This used JDM tranny has a 6-month unlimited mileage warranty on it. Good deal or not?

vfaq.com talks about JDM trannies. You can get a switchable JDM tranny which would be nice but I heard that some of them have different gear ratios than a US model. I was thinking about getting one but do not wanna take the risk in purchasing a used tranny from far away. You are better off getting yours rebuilt for that kind of money. Search
car-part.com and see if any local junkyards have a tranny for you. If you can pull the tranny, it can be rebuilt for ~$200-$250 plus whatever parts it needs. Then you will have a fresh tranny. The used tranny you order could be messed up like the one you have now.

Mine is JDM. One thing to know is that if you get a JDM one, it's going to be a gvr4 one. So you will have the longer galant 1st gear which is nice. Also when getting a tranny for these cars from those companies that import stuff from Japan, you have to look at the trannies serial number. If you get one with the wrong serial, then i think its something about the power distribuition ratio or something. Basically they won't work. I forgot the serial numbers, but once I see my Diego tranny buddy online I'll ask him and put up the serial numbers that work.

ok here's the serial numbers. Make sure it is one of these or it won't work properly

c50ph (switchable only)
c51ph
w5m33nqbk

The w5m one's are outta newer gvr4's and are ever so slightly beefier then the c51ph's. But both are just fine. I have a c51ph in mine.
