Like said above, $40k/year is about $20/hour and is a decent starting salary. You won't be rich or living like a king, but its enough money to live comfortably and drive something decent. Another thing to remember are the other perks that generally come with good jobs like a 401k plan, medical benefits, paid-vacation days, etc.
