OK,

How do you remove the 5th gear from a fwd 2g 5sp trany???

puley pullers have too fat teeth to fit around the gear and its super tight on there..

don't want to pry it off because it could break...

Anyone got a puller that fits for it?

You might consider getting a cheap one and grinding it down. If you pry they sometimes chip, put I don't see how a puller is really going to eliminate that possibility completely unless there is some were else to pull on.

mine was pretty loose, just slid off, but a friend had to use a puller to get it off...They aren't that brittle, you can pull em pretty hard, but I have chipped a few myself...As long as the tooth itself is still intact there wont be a problem, minor chips are expected...

There are several different kinds of pullers. I found one at an auto parts store that had pretty fat teeth. Make sure to get a 3 prong one. I did have to grind them down a tad, but they were pretty damn close. It was at autozone I think.

Alright, i will go take a look thru few stores and find something that works.... hate being stuck

take 2-3 prybars/ screwdrivers possible and pry....should work

I couldn't get that to work. I was literally standing on 2 pry bars and it didn't budge. Both were over 12" long too. Just get the gear puller, it will save a lot of frustration. You can borrow mine if you want too. Dunno why I didn't think of that earlier!

Enes 12-20-2003 12:00 AM

Thanx jet, if the one i got don't work i will take you up on that offer...

Now since TRE is being a little behotch won't sell me shift forks / shift rails and new syncros... and didn't answer my questions i sent them

the only answer he had for me...

I don't have any parts but you can spend $2400 on a trany i have and add the upgraded parts you want in there and i will ship it to you right away...

after he told me he don't have any parts... bull f'n shit..

Enes 12-20-2003 12:02 AM

anyone else that would sell me the good shift forks / rails and good syncros for the 2nd gear and 3rd gear

any other upgrades you would suggest for the 2nd gen FWD?

and no i won't go to a 1g

Enes 12-21-2003 01:29 AM

no one knows who else sells good shift rails..

I saw that BMtranny.com has billet shift forks, how do those compare to the evo one's ... which one's are better..

-E

MustGoFaster 12-21-2003 02:16 AM

The way I see it, yes the Evo's are steel, but they are still a stock part.

CVD 12-21-2003 03:00 AM

both are stronger than hell and will never break unless you are trying to. I went with new stock forks because i dont smash the tranny into gear ever. if you are worried, upgrade, but get the cheaper set.

I would rather spend that money on the DSMs real weakness: syncros. I would get 1-4 double syncro'd if you can afford it. my year old 3rd gear syncro is already starting to crunch a little after a season of racing, and i am very kind to my tranny.

Enes 12-21-2003 09:52 AM

who makes best syncros

and what about shift rails who else makes good one's

Halon 12-21-2003 10:45 AM

you could call up shepracing. im sure he'd be willing to answer your questions and he's very knowledgable on trannys

Enes 12-21-2003 11:22 AM

I asked him if he would sell the parts individually but he said he doesn't make much on the parts and so he doesn't stock many. I supose i could throw a few bucks in extra if he would sell me, maybe that would be an incentive enough?

CVD 12-21-2003 11:26 AM

I think TRE might be the only place to buy double syncros. BM and Shep have them i think, but i dont know that they sell them seperately from their trannies.

Conicelli sells evo forks for cheap, but they have plastic wear pads. TRE sells much spendier Evo forks that are moddified with metal wear pads. When I talked to John at TRE he also recomended getting upgraded shift rails when you got heavy duty rails, as that would then be the weak link.

I would poke around on their site a bit and come up with a parts list that fits your budget. TRE

Jakey 12-21-2003 01:39 PM

Doesn't Taboo Speed Shop sell some upgrade parts for the DSM trannys?

CVD 12-21-2003 02:31 PM

taboo specializes in the clutch system. basically everything but the clutch itself. Im pretty sure they dont sell tranny parts.

Enes 12-22-2003 12:39 AM

honestly price isn't that big of an issue right now, i want it done right since its getting done eithe way.. i rather spend the few extra bucks now than do it all over again next year...

The problem is that TRE does not have parts individually for sale but they will have them to put in a new trany... get the hint.. they only want to sell me whole trany but not the parts..

-E

CVD 12-22-2003 09:43 AM

I bought all of my parts from TRE to rebuild my tranny. They only have a few parts that they do not sell, like the 3/4 double syncro. Since you cant get that anywhere else either, you might as well get their 3/4 heavy duty setup.
