2002 Subaru WRX

This thread was initially a feeler to sell my car because I tore up a few gears in the tranny. Here's what the for sale thread looked like and what was done to the car before I did the swap:

Over the past couple weeks I started hearing some gear chatter in 1st gear. So I drained some gear oil and out came a tooth. So, 1st gear is in pretty bad shape. The car still drives even in 1st gear. Every other gear is quite. There are no other issues with this car. This is mostly a feeler until I figure out what it will cost me to fix it and if I can afford it right now or not. This car has been well taken care of. Sythetic oil changes every 3,000 miles. Recently changed the tranny and rear diff oil in the last 2 weeks (Super S 75w-90). Most Mods added in the last 6 months

Luckily I came accross a 2005 STi that was totalled. I shot the guy an offer of $4500 for it and he took it. I scrounged up the cash because I figured that I would spend at least half that much just fixing the tranny and if I did the swap I could possibly make the difference on parts from both the STi and WRX that I sell. So if anyone needs any parts from an 02 WRX shoot me a PM and I'll see if I got what you need!

So on Sunday October 24th, I picked up the totalled STi. The STi had been rolled over but mostly sustained front end and passenger side damage. The biggest thing was that the rear pass. side strut and axle were broken completely off. Otherwise, most other parts that I needed for the swap were in good condition. The motor started and ran decently well at the junk yard. Here's a few pics of what it looked like.

as you can see it was in pretty rough shape.

Right away that night, a good friend of mine and I started taking apart the STI until about 3 am. Throughout the whole next week we put in many hours between our jobs and other things...

Luckily we had a forklift handy. Making the drivetrain swap relatively simple ---- Undo wiring in engine bay and all the other crap, unbolt subframe, lower motor, tranny, diff, suspension parts to the ground and forklift the body away. And the same thing for the WRX. We just threw everything on dollies to make for an easy transition!

http://i999.photobucket.com/albums/a...p/DSCN1279.jpg

Then we brought in my 2002 WRX and did the same thing. Stripped everything off it, even all the wiring (except for the rear harness).

http://i999.photobucket.com/albums/a...p/DSCN1273.jpg

Now we're just about done. Today I finally got all the interior in. Tomorrow the rear axle should be done being rebuilt (since I counldn't find a rear STi axle anywhere!). Had to order two used BBS wheels because two were bent pretty bad (1 will make a good spare).

Unclean and Clean!

Hopefully will have it driving tomorrow! Complete swap in less than two weeks while holding a full time job!

Ha, that guy's on crack if he wants $5800 for a completely wasted STI.

Re: 2002 Subaru WRX

I offered him 4500 and he said he'd probly take it...Maybe I should offer him like 3000 and do the swap myself...

Re: 2002 Subaru WRX

Totaled STi's go for 10k or more, because everyone is wanting to do RSTis like mine.

I tried to low ball him and he knew what he had, and by low ball I mean 5k. He blew me off and won't even return my calls on individual parts.

I would say no, he just picked up an STi today to do the 2.5/6 speed swap.

ooooorrrrr, Kracka could move it to the project section and you could edit the original post a bit and keep a log of your progress! We need a new project thread around here.

I like that idea! Once it's over there I will add pics and info on my 05 STi swap!

Do it up, Subaru's can take over the site :D Glad you're coming along well, that dash install looked good. Also I got some brackets off of Nasioc today, but if you find a radio bracket let me know :)

I should come over Saturday and see your progress.

I was thinking is that steering column bent on the old car? The guy originally told me it was bent when I called him but I think I pissed him off.

Re: 2002 Subaru WRX

glad to hear you got what you were looking for!

As far as I could tell, the steering column is straight. But I probably will be able to tell more when I drive it...I should be around for some of the day on saturday. Just shoot me a text!

Re: 2002 Subaru WRX

Lookin good man!! You gonna have this thing back on the road by the weekend then? I suppose you'll be seeing Jeff the alignment guy and Nuke for a tune soon too huh? I'll grab those STi Yellow's for ya this weekend if I remember so you can ship them out to WitchHunter, just pay me whenever if you decide to go that route.

Also: We'll have to "test and compare" again, I think you'll do a little better this time :)

Very nice man! That looks like a fun as hell project. Can't wait to see this thing in action.

Goodhart, is Nuke a good tuner? I've just never trusted street tunes have a hard time trusting anyone other than Shane.

I've never heard anything bad about him, I've talked to him a few times, he knows his shit. "Bullwinkle" tuned my old WRX twice and they were both awesome safe tunes, he just won't tune E-85 cars for some reason, I think Nuke may drink E-85 for breakfast, he loves that shit haha. Maybe Steve can chime in some more about Nuke, I think he tuned him shortly before his tranny went.

Re: 2002 Subaru WRX

Interesting, he seems to be an Evo hater so I'll never get tuned by him :)

Re: 2002 Subaru WRX

Ha, yea, we've had a few debates on that subject as well. He tried to convince me to keep my WRX, I told him no thanks, I'll make easy power :)

psychorunner 11-05-2010 01:18 AM

Re: 2002 Subaru WRX

Hoping for a tune on Monday or Tuesday from Nuke. He did a good job last time on the WRX motor. I had no complaints other than a fluctuating boost issue that we worked out via online tuning. I've never had a dyno tune so I really don't know if it's better or worse, I just know it's cheaper!! Definately a diehard Subaru guy.

Guess I'll have to order a fuel pump along with sending out those injectors!!

Hopefully it will be on the ground tomorrow night as long as I get the headlight wiring figured out. Just a few other small things to work out, but nothing major!
