Project XXX AWD WHP Or Bust!
My 91 Eagle Project XXX AWD WHP Or Bust!
http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...424_175045.jpg Back Ground Story Had the car for about two years. Ive always had big plans for it, never really got around to getting the car to run at its best. However i did enjoy my evo III 16G set up while i had it. It was a really fun Daily Driver. Long story Short Engine always had low compression since i got it, and after 2 years of driving it it started developing slight knock under acceleration. Early February of 2011. Didnt think nothing big of it, assumed it was lifter tick. Just how it proved to be in the past. 5w30 what can ya say. Changed to Rottella 5w 40 and rottela 15w 40 lifter tick never came back. However It turned out to be my rod bearings were starting to go out. Drained the oil sure enough metal shavings. http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...318_190917.jpg http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...318_190906.jpg Not sure if you can tell from the picture Unfortunately a friend of mines talon caught on fire, mid winter but had plenty goodies i could use in my build that i always wanted to start. So over the winter i was partially setting my car up in stages to make some serious power. For the most part at first i had a power goal of roughly 450- 500 hundred whp on map's dyno. I began to research what reasonable power people can make on the set up reliably. . .and i quickly trashed that goal. Even though before it made over 400whp on map's dyno. After realizing what it takes to build a car of that caliper, i dont have a huge huge power goal anymore instead im building it to make whatever and be fun. Not quite the stop light pull/highway run fun you can have with the 16G sized turbos ect ( I would like to make somewhat around 400 on DB's dyno number wise) However like i said this build is all about having fun and the learning process doing something ive never tried before ect. I dont want set my self up for disappointment. . .but i am going for boarder line broke to an extend. Ive silently worked away with a couple friends of mine. Welding up exhaust,http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...242473_o-1.jpg http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...5_554603_o.jpg installing a FMIC, http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x..._5784355_o.jpg http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...0_194153-1.jpg http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...410_200522.jpg installed a Dual wally set up ditching my old 190 http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...08111903-1.jpg http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...08111853-1.jpg http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...387854_n-1.jpg Got my oil pressure gauge, wideband, over all just prepping the car for a bigger turbo. I got a new bumper for the car and resprayed that. http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x..._7272386_o.jpg http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...411_000147.jpg Then i started getting a little painting happy, and decided to do my wheels valve cover. Put a shiney stock intake manifold. http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...417_011607.jpg http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...416_233948.jpg http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...6_223549-1.jpg http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...416_184104.jpg http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...6_222237-1.jpg http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...416_220043.jpg http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...416_192715.jpg http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...416_182319.jpg http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...416_182226.jpg I also painted my strut bar and fuel rail. The fuel rail turned out nicely the strut bar well. . . i liked it but it might be a little to much not sure. Car was starting to look what i wanted it to look like exterior wise. http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...7_150019-1.jpg Felt like i was putting a gold ring on a pigs snout though, since this engine was getting old and was having so many issues, but it was still fun. The end process turned out ok i thought? What do you guys think? It all will need to be redone, since i am clueless when it comes to painting. Some of the paint on the wheels was starting to chip just before it got parked. I got A LOT of funny looks with the white bumper on to my surprise a few thumbs up. I was mostly doing all this while going to school full time and working full time. Funniest of all i was still Daily Driving My Talon that was starting to develop Rod Knock. Picked up some ACL Race bearings from MAP (GREAT SERVICE BY THE WAY :D) Everything seemed to be coming together nicely. All that was left was continuing to save up money and just baby the car until i could put in the rod bearings and call her good. Do the e85 conversion ect. Never mind the low compression (THE LOWER THE COMPRESSION THE MORE BOOST YOU RUN RIGHT? jk) Run her till she gives. Since the option, or train of thought was: If i brake the engine in car pushing its limits and learning how to use DSM link and what not. I could always swap engines from the Donor car. The plan became reality faster then i thought. I picked up a set of 1200cc injectors, gm maf and what not getting ready to switch over to e85. I got a few more parts. http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...404_213008.jpg Mid April But my car started developing a intermittent miss fire which i couldn't figure out. As a result the e85 was put on hold. I boost leak tested after boost leak tested. Sprayed my wires to see if they were grounding out somehow somewhere. Did all the checks i could think of swapping coils, different wires, checking the injector circuit ect nothing seemed to get rid of it. My ECU was fine. After a while I figured the engine must just be starting at its limits and overall worn. After Checking everything i decided to pull my plugs and clean them up just to do routine maintenance. What i found once again changed my plans for my project. I overlooked the most simplest thing my plugs. http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...417_172101.jpg As you could see the plug must of came slightly loose and when i happily went to remove it, it decided to take the threads out of my cylinder head :). . .so now my Engine was knocking do the bearings going out and the head had to come of in order to properly fix the threads. Plus it had low compression to begin with you can consider it junk to an extend! The car being my daily driver and me having an appointment that very same day i gently put the plug back in and surprisingly it went back in, and stayed in. BIG MISTAKE! It drove and still pulled ok. . .i could tell it was a ticking bomb though. . . May This brings us to a couple weeks back that dont have anything relevant to do with this project except for my replacement for the talon. My New daily driver a 1993 HONDA CIVIC! Its such a surprisingly nice car! Turn key starts, the exterior is rusted but which honda isnt . . .picked it up 2weeks or 3 weeks ago. http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...1_593881_o.jpg http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...424_175103.jpg For the good part or the going to be/ already have mod list and plans: -Rebuilt 6 Bolt Block -ACL Race Rod Bearings -Stock pistons and rods -280 Brain crower Camms -FP Exhaust Manifold -Precision 50 Trim Turbo -Exterior Oil Cooler -ETS FMIC street kit core & SUPER CUSTOM PIPING! -K Sport Coil Overs -DSM LINK -GM Maf -1200CC RC Injectors -Turbosmart external wastegate with dump tube -2G 2Piston Front Brake Upgrade -Magnesium purple lug nuts (FOR MEGA WEIGHT SAVINGS HA!) -Polly Mounts -AEM Wideband -Prosport Oil Pressure Gauge -Prosport Boost Pressure Gauge -(Undecided on clutch considering a Ebay clutch XTD stage 4 Racing clutch) Heard some positive reviews about them on GVR4 -Stainless steel braided Clutch Line -New Slave Cylinder -Greedy Blow BOV -4 Bolt Rear End Conversion -Mishimoto Radiator/Slim Fans Prolly left some stuff out but it gives people an idea. . . Plans are to pretty much get all the parts installed, do a semi wire tuck, paint the engine bay black. Respray my wheels fuel rail, maybe the front mount intercooler. Have my valve cover painted by Primo wrinkle some kind of color. Overall the theme color for the car is Black and Purple. Most people dont care so much about the exterior look and colors ect. I would like to have my car look tasteful but not ricey and be quick. So thats it pretty much for now. We pulled the replacement engine last weekend while the hurricanes were flying around. It will be transported to the location where my shell is next week. Ill frequently update with pictures ect. Ill be looking for some feed back as far as power goals, and supporting mods go in case im forgetting anything ect. Enjoy :) I hope for it all to be said and done early to mid July. I would be dreaming if i expected some negative comments but if possible when criticizing lets keep it constructive and come up with good alternatives ect. I hope you guys will enjoy the journey and who knows it might inspire a few of you to finish your projects. So we can all have a fun summer. (SORRY FOR THE HUGE PICTURES I CANT FIGURE OUT HOW TO SHRINK THEM) :D |
Re: Project XXX AWD WHP Or Bust!
Nice work man, big project! Keep us updated as you get it fixed.
I think I missed the part about the intake manifold swap, what was that all about? Just pics no explanation. |
Re: Project XXX AWD WHP Or Bust!
That xtd stage 4 clutch is a pretty good clutch for the money. But I wouldnt put it in a daily driver. I have one in my talon and it works great.

Re: Project XXX AWD WHP Or Bust!
i also had a xtd stg 4 in my talon loved it till the rivits got shered off.. i liked my clutchnet sprung 6puck much much more
|
Re: Project XXX AWD WHP Or Bust!
i got a xtd stage 3 6 puck sprgun in my 1g and im going to be pulling it out soon for a clutch nets sprung 6puck . the xtd works so far just chatters like none other
|
Re: Project XXX AWD WHP Or Bust!
So far it seems like clutch chatter and driveability in the concern for a daily driver. 2cons and one good, being for the prize it is a decent clutch. How is the pedal feel on it? My old clutch was a act 2100 full face street disk. Now most people that have experience using the xtd what kind of set ups did you guys have before power wise? What other options should i consider? At first i was thinking act 2600 with a 6 puck sprung, untill i read up on a few nightmare storys about the springs coming loose. . .
|
Re: Project XXX AWD WHP Or Bust!
xtds kick springs pretty easy. clutchnet is the only brand to fully enclose their springs on both sides. my stage 3 is probably in line with a 2100. xtd will work but it wont last more then a year maybe 2 if you baby it
|
Re: Project XXX AWD WHP Or Bust!
In my old talon I ran xtd stage 3 and it worked great. The pedal feel was good and it was easy to drive. It held the power and I never broke it in. my new talon I put the xtd stage 4 unsprung clutch in and its tough to drive. The pedal is pretty hard.
|
Re: Project XXX AWD WHP Or Bust!
trust me get the clutchnet 6puck it well worth it its an amazing clutch and is quite smooth for a 6puck, i had it paired with the xtd 2300lb pressure plate and i loved it

Re: Project XXX AWD WHP Or Bust!
I have an ACT Streetlite Chromoly flywheel I am trying to get rid of as well.

Re: Project XXX AWD WHP Or Bust!
Well i made a little bit more progress, between working and attending graduation party's this weekend. On sunday we got the transmission dropped which was one interesting experience. The only problem i ran into was me overlooking a long bolt that held the splash shield or metal plate that goes between the block and trans. Hear im trying to jiggle and pry the transmission off and i could feel it coming loose, but then it stopped. Looked all around only to figure out i was prying the piss out of that plate. Removed that bolt and it came out so nicely!
http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...529_183347.jpg Fancy way of moving the talon around. Since my friends family was so nice to offer me their garage to work on my car. I insisted on not taking up garage space unless i really needed it. . .So every night when done working on the car i clean up and roll the pig out with the help of my buddy. Fun way of moving it around. :D http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...529_183333.jpg http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...529_183325.jpg http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...529_183316.jpg http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...529_175916.jpg http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...529_163127.jpg I didnt bother pulling the clutch, to see in what shape it was, ill do that a little later on. Most likely tomorrow. |
Re: Project XXX AWD WHP Or Bust!
Memorial Monday made a little bit more progress attempted to pull the engine which turned out to be quite the fun experience. I got a little overzealous and forgot to move the harness out the way, as well as disconnect the throttle cable of the intake manifold. . . FAIL!!! The engine was being hoisted up and out slowly enough that the slightest tension alarmed us and we checked for any disassemble errors made by ME :) Once i disconnected the cable and moved the harness up and over the manifold piece a cake! Now the only thing i would not recommend to anyone, is the way we got the engine out. It wasnt unsafe i think personaly, but the pictures can explain better then i can
http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...529_202842.jpg http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...529_191858.jpg http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...529_191848.jpg http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...529_191837.jpg http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...529_191816.jpg http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...529_185728.jpg http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...29_1857282.jpg http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...29_1857192.jpg http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...529_185553.jpg Got everything out and then moved a few of the electrical things and started degreasing a little bit. . . http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...529_202153.jpg http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...529_201134.jpg http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...529_200513.jpg http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...529_200508.jpg Next i started removing things on the fire wall cutting the zip ties holding the harness into place to move it out the way while taking things off and what not. So during the next couple days ill be working on the harness. |

The xxx's ehh? Lol i thought the exact same thing this morning while in class. However the x's represent unknown whp/tq numbers.

Re: Project XXX AWD WHP Or Bust!
I say you shoot for 600whp at map or 500 at DB whatever comes first, everyone is doing it.
|
Re: Project XXX AWD WHP Or Bust!
Looks like youre making good progress and learning a lot.
Also I think you want to put the axles back into the hubs when moving the car around. If you don't you might end up wrecking your wheel bearings. |
Re: Project XXX AWD WHP Or Bust!
Yeah it sure is fun, the best way to learn is hands on after all. I got slightly intimidated by the wiring harness once it was all laying there in a bundle, and i figured why even mess with it but i love wiring and as long as i have some diagrams to read and reference material ill be fine. Plus it will be all worth it in the end.

Re: Project XXX AWD WHP Or Bust!
Made a little more progress yesterday. Started working on the wiring harness, getting it out the way for paint ect and removing all the wire loom and what not. During this phase the only issues ive run into is getting the crusty hard protectors that have been soaked and hardened by the hot oil cut opened. I attempted to remove the harness from the engine bay half way through it, i figured well why pull it out when i have all the space in the world right hear in the empty engine bay. (Granted he real reason was because i couldnt figure out how to even get it out) Doing it in the engine bay just made it seem simpler.
Next problem, which im sure many of you have dealt with and fixed were the broken wires that go to the coolant elbow. They are so tore up, i wonder if i can trace those few wires back far enough to find good enough material and just solder new wires and put spade connectors on them and call it good? Seems like thats the way a few members have done it? http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...530_205631.jpg Picture of the replacement engine it needs to still be stripped down, degreased and cleaned up painted. . . and a few other minor things. Timing belt, oil pan gasket pretty much all the tedious things you wouldn't want to do with the engine in car. http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...521_210503.jpg |
Re: Project XXX AWD WHP Or Bust!
Just curious, but do you not have any chains? I've never really liked the idea of lifting an engine with any kind of strap.
|
Re: Project XXX AWD WHP Or Bust!
We did have chains, however the hook or what ever you may call it, was rusted closed. Needed a alternative. I plan on using chains when hoisting it back in. The second time round we used a different hoist that didnt have the nice chain set up so i had to once again use the alternative method. I was extremely nervous through out the whole time.

Re: Project XXX AWD WHP Or Bust!
Wow suggest you take that off those straps asap. specially if there from fleet farm!!
just lookin out for your toes man... be safe.. |

Looks like it served a very nice purpose! Its not cracked neither and will be getting ceramic coated along with the fp manifold. Ill post before and after pictures when everything is done. I just need to make my way to primo. New dead line for the car,I would rally like to get it up and running by BIR. Need to put long days into it. Ill take this time to update a little more. Timing cover came off the engine rather easily being have torched up and melted lol. The timing belt was still in tact to my surprise. Engine turns over with a wrench nice as well. Only slight thought of concern was the timing belt jumping a tooth. Ill post a picture to show exactly what i mean. Its just a tooth so i don't think its to big of a deal. Next to the engine being EXTREMELY DIRTY its the only thing of slight concern for now oh and the fact once you run E85 EVERYTHING SMELLS LIKE IT LITERALLY EVERYTHING! Even the spark plug wires smell like it! :D I do need a little bit of help again. For those guys that have access to wiring diagrams besides all data, when i cut my harness apart i forgot to label the injector connector order. Luckily each injector is color coordinated, however the diagrams i looked at don't specify which color is which injector. So if any of you can run out to your 91 eagle talon pull up the connector and share the wiring color in respect to its cylinder that would be awesome! ! ! |
Re: Project XXX AWD WHP Or Bust!
Little Update. . . Engine bay is painted. Engine and transmission are back in. Intercooler is mounted. Radiator in. The wiring harness is almost complete. The only thing left is to finish the intercooler piping. Tuck the harness. Install the starter and other miscellaneous things. I decided to go with the xtd clutch just to see what the big fuss about it was. Once again ill let the pictures do the talking. This project has been nothing but a blast!

Pretty much almost all done. Only thing left is the intercooler piping ect of course and filling all the fluids and so forth http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...624_204326.jpg xtd clutch looks nice, im not expecting much from it. Ran a little low on funds so i decided to give it a shot. Hopefully ill be able to achieve the same results as many others that had a good turn out with that clutch. As far as pedal comfort and performance. http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...624_135524.jpg The engine bay turned better then i thought two coats of jet black pretty happy with the results. http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...624_135500.jpg Donor heart meet vessel? lol http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...621_185035.jpg Primer. . . .Never mind the custom way of wrapping the engine wiring harness. It was a tip from a female friend. It worked way better then i thought! Why didnt you just pull the harness. . . because i couldnt figure out how to get it out. . .granted i only spend 5mins pulling the ecu ect and disconnecting the connectors and when it didnt budge i gave up. . . http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...621_010555.jpg Silver monkey. . . .Didnt make any sense to me, but a friend mentioned how it reminded me of a monkey . . . i dont see it but oh well. http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...620_220650.jpg Self explanatory ha http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...620_175857.jpg If anyone has any clue what so ever as far as what this connector goes to please let me know, because i do not remember at all! http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...616_162051.jpg Finish product. . .stock turbo mounted to brake in the clutch and get it all set up on e85 and then pull the 14b and get a little more ummpfff back on it http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...616_162031.jpg Another picture of the engine. http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...616_151237.jpg http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...616_140328.jpg http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...616_125636.jpg http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...616_125457.jpg Brakes. . .Slightly to silvery for my taste. Dosnt look to bad with the black wheels on. Let me know what you guys think. The rest are just random pictures through out from when i got the engine to when it was put on the stand. Had its pan pulled ect http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...616_125450.jpg http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...614_152545.jpg http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...614_152540.jpg http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...614_130432.jpg http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...614_130425.jpg http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...608_220426.jpg http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...608_220419.jpg http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...608_214313.jpg http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...608_214236.jpg http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...608_214206.jpg http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...605_200741.jpg I just noticed that the pictures are going from most recent to most oldest. Its obviously suppose to go from bottom to top sorry about that. I will post a few more pictures of the new radiator, front mount, ask for some advice as far as placement for my oil cooler. Initially i planned to put it in between the radiator and front mount. However i dont want to block any air flow to the radiator ect. I doubt it is that great of an obstruction but im not sure. Overall im just posting pictures for people to look at maybe inspire them to start a project or finish one or continue to work on. Maybe give them something to waste time on. Or just poke fun of mine haha thats always nice to see what stuff people can come up with. |
Re: Project XXX AWD WHP Or Bust!
Small update we are back to square one. . . Engine Decided to quit on a test run. . .it sure has been a fun project way to disappointing. Putting all that work in just to have a piston get lodged in the cylinder ...bend a valve as well! Autopsy still to be conducted. Here are a few pictures i would appreciate a couple wild stabs as to what excactly went wrong.
Background information, I got everything put together took it for a test drive probably 3 or 4 times a mile or 2 on the last test drive the car stalled out on me on a hill. Couldnt get her started again due to a dead battery. Alternator was not hooked up. Eventually figured out where i went wrong in the wiring. When i did get it started, there was this horrible knock. Did a little bit of diagnosing and it seemed to be a stock rocker cleaned it out. Started her back up noise was still there and very audiable. Decided to take it for a test drive and perhaps free up any debry that might of caused another rocker to get stock. However on the test drive after a light second gear pull, the car begann to sputter and shutter and you could hear some kind of snapping noise and it died. Once fully stopped i attempted starting it with minimal succes she fired fired nothing fired. So My friend was positive i lost compression on one cylinder for some reason. We rolled the car forward slightly in 5th gear to check the timing marks which were still dead on. I forgot to mention before driving we concluded something like a bolt or nut might be stuck in my intake manifold or something of that nature, since the noise was intermittent loud then not so loud. Long story short there was nothing in the intake or cylinder for that matter. The pictures speak for them self. Cylinder 1 was resting at BDC along with 2 and 3 while 4 was up at TDC :) I guess ive blown my first 4G. What are my plans: After contemplating parting it out multiple times, i just couldnt get my self to give up on everything. Instead i decided to take it a little slower and build it over the fall and winter see how it goes. http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...4G/carnage.jpg http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...ctor4G/sad.jpg http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...ctor4G/mia.jpg http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...r4G/head-1.jpg http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...ctor4G/gay.jpg http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...or4G/dsm-1.jpg Atleast it looked alright broke down in the middle of the street http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...transplant.jpg I figured i best get to putting the other engine that originally came out of the car together . . . since this wasnt going to end pretty and i sure was dead on! |
Re: Project XXX AWD WHP Or Bust!
Did you pull the rod and main bearings on the replacement motor to see if they had any damage PRIOR to installing? Pull pistons? Check rings? Or any of the clearances?
The intake cam timing had to be out of sync with the crank for something like that to happen. Unless you were doing 8k+ pulls on stock springs with crazy cams. One more thing, when a rocker comes off a lifter, 99% of the time that valve is toast already. If you had checked compression instead of driving it again, I can pretty much guarantee you would've had 0. |
Re: Project XXX AWD WHP Or Bust!
There is so much i guess i should have Tripple checked instead of just checking for bearing side play hand crank her a couple times and check her out good. @ Blackawdtsi really? Thats interesting i never knew that neither regarding the rocker. Since she cranked and turned over nice. It sounded like it had good compression, Now that i think about it did take a while to get the car to start which i blamed ignition timing and old fuel for. Since after i got ti started once it always started fine.
Regarding the timing, no crazy 8k pulls. . .280camms on stock springs ect. I know those springs wouldnt be able to support hard driving but for a gentle drive that didnt go over 5k for all i know and less then a mile it should of held up. At this point im just trying to figure out what exactly went wrong, which i have a feeling is impossible. . .could something have been seriously wrong previously that i missed when i checked the bottom end? Like was said i should of pulled the rod bearings and main bearings but i didnt my fault. I still dont get how that knock just appeared test drove it once twice no odd noises. A compression test would of most likely revealed valuable information. My Timing marks on the crank and camshaft were spot on before the engine was hoisted in the car. It took me 3 trys, because research stressed that even a tooth or half a tooth with such large camms would make for disaster so i was dead dead on. Even after the car broke down, we checked the timing MARKS again and they were still ON!
