2002 Subaru WRX
This thread was initially a feeler to sell my car because I tore up a few gears in the tranny. Here's what the for sale thread looked like and what was done to the car before I did the swap:
Over the past couple weeks I started hearing some gear chatter in 1st gear. So I drained some gear oil and out came a tooth. So, 1st gear is in pretty bad shape. The car still drives even in 1st gear. Every other gear is quite. There are no other issues with this car. This is mostly a feeler until I figure out what it will cost me to fix it and if I can afford it right now or not. This car has been well taken care of. Sythetic oil changes every 3,000 miles. Recently changed the tranny and rear diff oil in the last 2 weeks (Super S 75w-90). Most Mods added in the last 6 months General: 2002 Subaru WRX 96,500 miles Power/exhaust: Grimspeed BCS (can include stock BCS and tune with stock boost map if interested in STX for autox) AEM short ram intake with custom heat shield Cobb Turbo Heatshield PTP Turbo Blanket 3'' ERZ catted downpipe STi Catless Uppipe 5zigen Fireball catback Nuke tune Drivetrain: SPT clutch and flywheel SPT Short Shifter Suspension/handling: Tein lowering springs Cobb 24mm (adjustable) rear swaybar with solid mounts Whiteline 24mm solid front swaybar Kartboy Endlinks (front and rear) Alignment from "Jeff the Alignment Guy" Brakes: Stoptech slotted and drilled rotors (10,000 miles) Stoptech steel braided brake lines Whatever pads that come with Stoptech stage 2 kit Motul Brake Fluid Wheels: 17x8 +45 Matte Bronze RPF1s - Dunlop Direzza Starspecs 245/40-17 16'' Stock WRX wheels painted gold with Goodyear Eagle GT 205/55-16 (down to the wearbars) Exterior/interior: Resprayed Hood, bumper, and fenders this summer (By MC Autoworks in ST Cloud) Eyelids Blacked out OEM headlights Rally Armor Mudflaps painted sideskirts 50% tint all around Debadged Trunk Brand new windshield! I shot the guy an offer of $4500 for it and he took it. I scrounged up the cash because I figured that I would spend at least half that much just fixing the tranny and if I did the swap I could possibly make the difference on parts from both the STi and WRX that I sell. So if anyone needs any parts from an 02 WRX shoot me a PM and I'll see if I got what you need! So on Sunday October 24th, I picked up the totalled STi. The STi had been rolled over but mostly sustained front end and passenger side damage. The biggest thing was that the rear pass. side strut and axle were broken completely off. Otherwise, most other parts that I needed for the swap were in good condition. The motor started and ran decently well at the junk yard. Here's a few pics of what it looked like. http://i999.photobucket.com/albums/a...p/DSCN1214.jpg http://i999.photobucket.com/albums/a...p/DSCN1211.jpg http://i999.photobucket.com/albums/a...p/DSCN1213.jpg as you can see it was in pretty rough shape. Right away that night, a good friend of mine and I started taking apart the STI until about 3 am. Throughout the whole next week we put in many hours between our jobs and other things... http://i999.photobucket.com/albums/a..._4190290_n.jpg http://i999.photobucket.com/albums/a..._6219524_n.jpg http://i999.photobucket.com/albums/a..._4302192_n.jpg http://i999.photobucket.com/albums/a...p/DSCN1232.jpg Luckily we had a forklift handy. Making the drivetrain swap relatively simple ---- Undo wiring in engine bay and all the other crap, unbolt subframe, lower motor, tranny, diff, suspension parts to the ground and forklift the body away. And the same thing for the WRX. We just threw everything on dollies to make for an easy transition! http://i999.photobucket.com/albums/a..._1980520_n.jpg http://i999.photobucket.com/albums/a..._6667372_n.jpg http://i999.photobucket.com/albums/a...p/DSCN1227.jpg http://i999.photobucket.com/albums/a...p/DSCN1279.jpg Then we brought in my 2002 WRX and did the same thing. Stripped everything off it, even all the wiring (except for the rear harness). http://i999.photobucket.com/albums/a...p/DSCN1273.jpg http://i999.photobucket.com/albums/a...p/DSCN1273.jpg Now we're just about done. Today I finally got all the interior in. Tomorrow the rear axle should be done being rebuilt (since I counldn't find a rear STi axle anywhere!). Had to order two used BBS wheels because two were bent pretty bad (1 will make a good spare). http://i999.photobucket.com/albums/a...p/DSCN1281.jpg Unclean and Clean! http://i999.photobucket.com/albums/a...1104001420.jpg http://i999.photobucket.com/albums/a...1104001530.jpg Hopefully will have it driving tomorrow! Complete swap in less than two weeks while holding a full time job! More pics here too: http://s999.photobucket.com/albums/a...%20WRX%20Swap/ |

Re: 2002 Subaru WRX
I offered him 4500 and he said he'd probly take it...Maybe I should offer him like 3000 and do the swap myself...
|
Re: 2002 Subaru WRX
Totaled STi's go for 10k or more, because everyone is wanting to do RSTis like mine.
I tried to low ball him and he knew what he had, and by low ball I mean 5k. He blew me off and won't even return my calls on individual parts. |

I would say no, he just picked up an STi today to do the 2.5/6 speed swap. |
Re: 2002 Subaru WRX
sorry, it isn't. I guess this thread can be deleted.

ooooorrrrr, Kracka could move it to the project section and you could edit the original post a bit and keep a log of your progress! We need a new project thread around here. |
Re: 2002 Subaru WRX
I like that idea! Once it's over there I will add pics and info on my 05 STi swap!
|
Re: 2002 Subaru WRX
Do it up, Subaru's can take over the site :D Glad you're coming along well, that dash install looked good. Also I got some brackets off of Nasioc today, but if you find a radio bracket let me know :)
I should come over Saturday and see your progress. I was thinking is that steering column bent on the old car? The guy originally told me it was bent when I called him but I think I pissed him off. |
Re: 2002 Subaru WRX
glad to hear you got what you were looking for!
As far as I could tell, the steering column is straight. But I probably will be able to tell more when I drive it...I should be around for some of the day on saturday. Just shoot me a text! |
Re: 2002 Subaru WRX
Lookin good man!! You gonna have this thing back on the road by the weekend then? I suppose you'll be seeing Jeff the alignment guy and Nuke for a tune soon too huh? I'll grab those STi Yellow's for ya this weekend if I remember so you can ship them out to WitchHunter, just pay me whenever if you decide to go that route.
Also: We'll have to "test and compare" again, I think you'll do a little better this time :) |
Re: 2002 Subaru WRX
Very nice man! That looks like a fun as hell project. Can't wait to see this thing in action.
Goodhart, is Nuke a good tuner? I've just never trusted street tunes have a hard time trusting anyone other than Shane. |

I've never heard anything bad about him, I've talked to him a few times, he knows his shit. "Bullwinkle" tuned my old WRX twice and they were both awesome safe tunes, he just won't tune E-85 cars for some reason, I think Nuke may drink E-85 for breakfast, he loves that shit haha. Maybe Steve can chime in some more about Nuke, I think he tuned him shortly before his tranny went. |
Re: 2002 Subaru WRX
Interesting, he seems to be an Evo hater so I'll never get tuned by him :)
|
Re: 2002 Subaru WRX
Ha, yea, we've had a few debates on that subject as well. He tried to convince me to keep my WRX, I told him no thanks, I'll make easy power :)
|
Re: 2002 Subaru WRX
Hoping for a tune on Monday or Tuesday from Nuke. He did a good job last time on the WRX motor. I had no complaints other than a fluctuating boost issue that we worked out via online tuning. I've never had a dyno tune so I really don't know if it's better or worse, I just know it's cheaper!! Definately a diehard Subaru guy.
Guess I'll have to order a fuel pump along with sending out those injectors!! Hopefully it will be on the ground tomorrow night as long as I get the headlight wiring figured out. Just a few other small things to work out, but nothing major! |
Re: 2002 Subaru WRX
Yea, you would definitely need a Walbro. Should be a blast of a car on corn! We will probably be right around the same power level by then.
|
Re: 2002 Subaru WRX
Nice job with the swap, looking good!
|
Re: 2002 Subaru WRX
Great progress. Looks like a nice garage there.

Re: 2002 Subaru WRX
Thanks! Yup, lotsa space to make a mess!

After that it would still studder when you really got on it. So changed the plugs (should have done that right away anyway) and now it runs great! Just headed down to Nuke for a tune today to finish things up. Last night fixed the ABS, just had to use a different speed sensor. Just a few little odds and ends here and there. Still has some sort of tourque steer, but I know it's not because I'm putting out that much power. . . Must be something loose under the car. Only other concern so far is excess lifter noise. At least that's what it sounds like, so I'm not too worried about it. |
Re: 2002 Subaru WRX
Bout time you update! haha
Your welcome for the spark plug reccomendation also ;) I'm excited to see what Nuke can get out of it for power, we'll definitely need a re-match now that you have an extra .5L of displacement and a bigger turbo. :D Really our cars are at about even levels now, cause if yours was a factory STi like an 04-05, it would be considered "Stage 2" right? I wonder if Bugeye's weigh any less? |
Re: 2002 Subaru WRX
Yea! headed down there today. It is considered "stage 2" but the weight difference really isn't much I don't think. 2002 WRX curb weight is 3085 and the 2005 STI is 3265 from what I found. I'll have to see how much it really weighs now though...We'll have to get a re-match in the next week sometime??or go play out in the snow!
|
Re: 2002 Subaru WRX
Heck, 180 lbs is a fair amount. I really wonder how much that 2.5L, 6 speed and the huge ass brakes add to it though? Cause WRX brakes are tiny tiny compared to the STi brembos.
|
Re: 2002 Subaru WRX
The 6 speed and the brakes add 100-200lbs, it's still gonna be quick though a cobb "stage 2" STi is about the same power as a stock Evo IX with a few addons and a tune.
That's awesome you got it done man! I would like a ride in this thing sometime, I bet it's a sweet ride. How does it feel to finish a big swap like this? |
Re: 2002 Subaru WRX
Who's rally car?! ;)

Re: 2002 Subaru WRX

Feels great to get it done, still a few odds and ends, but it's running good! I went and got a tune from Nuke yesterday and I need more fueling because my dumb ass didnt switch over the STI fuel pump and was using the WRX fuel pump. So if I find the right injectors I will probably just jump to E85 right away since I have to change the fuel pump anyway. |

Nice work man. I wish i could pick your old parts. The head gaskets just went out on my 97 outback. And i would love to do a turbo swap. lol
|
Re: 2002 Subaru WRX
Ahhh yes the EJ25D and it's headgasget issue :( Good luck man.
|
Re: 2002 Subaru WRX
Ya its gonna suck to replace them. Specially with the motor in the car. lol. And sadly now i have to dig into the money i was starting to save for the talon.
