So your assembling the motor??

or a few motors?

good job and good luck!!
Sounds like a helluva project you got going on.

Re: Project!

James: What do you mean?

Turbodomestics: I'm getting help but yah, we are putting it back together. I couldn't do it by myself.

I PICKED IT UP LAST NIGHT! It's not as shitty as I thought. There are two rust spots on the passenger side that are bothering me, but I can fix that. The interior is practically mint, and all the parts that came with it are in really great shape. My turbo if re-built and never used! Only thing is my SMIC is smashed, so I'm going to be in the market for a new one of those. The car is blue, and I actually like it. When I was looking at the pictures of it, I thought it was going to be uglier than hell, but it's a lot better looking than I expected. I think I got a hell of a deal on this, so I'm really pumped! There's already a lot thats going into it that we have right now, and it should be a fun little car when it's done. Can't wait!

is that a DSM specific remark? or a year model one? cause i think if an old car is taken care of, and you listen to it and don't let problems get out of hand, you'll be fine.

What are we talking about?

Re: Project!

90s have a bunch of stupid parts.

Oil cooler is external, tranny spline count and transfer case is different, Shift linkages are different.

Not like 91-94 at all IMO.

Re: Project!

I just got myself a pretty clean 90 Laser RS-Turbo FWD and a Non Turbo parts car to go with it. The turbo one has a siezed motor and the non turbo has I have no idea what wrong with it. If the NT is easy to fix, I will fix that and sell it, but both are white, so before that, I will mix and match all the body panels I like to the Turbo one.

Let's see who can get it running faster.

Tonight I am going to get it ripped down to the point of being able to pull the motor out, and I might possibly take the trans out of it tonight too.

Because Colin says so.

Re: Project!

The oil cooler is the good part of the 90!

Other than that, I thought all the was different, was the tranny, shifter cables, t-case, and the ignition and t-body.

carltalon 01-29-2006 08:16 PM

Re: Project!

The FWD tranny has the same spline count as any other fwd dsm. The only differnts is the linkage. The ecu is different along with the ignition coil and transistor. I think thats the only thing not mentioned. nothing to difficult I've already swaped tranny, ECU, coil, tranistor, throttle body and TPS. if you have any problems just let me know.

Re: Project!

yeah, external oil coolers are the bomb.

i plan on mounting mine to the front of my bumper.

Re: Project!

Thanks guys. Well we pretty much have it all figured out of all the work we need to do and the parts we still need.

Need:
Exhaust Studs
Cam Seals
Rear main seal
Balance Shaft Removal Kit

Gaskets needed:
Valve Cover
exhaust
Head
Oil pan
Oil ass.
Rear Main
cam seals

Also I will be getting the head, intake manifold, and exhaust manifold all ported. Other shit needs to be done to but I don't feel like typing it up.

Jakey 01-29-2006 09:55 PM

Re: Project!

Don't waste your time with the 1G exhaust manifold, get a 2G. Why are you porting the head and intake manifold? Have you checked to see if the car has an EPROM ecu?

Re: Project!

If I have any advice for any of you working on this motor/car. Do not cut corners to try to save money. DSMs are unreliable as it is, if you cut corners to try to save a buck you will regret it down the road.

Also don't be affraid to have someone come and show you things like how to do a timing belt ect. That is one thing if done wrong can set you back a lot of money.

Steve Hill showed me how to do it the right way the first time. I paid him to show me once and I now its a piece of cake.

If you are going to use used stock parts from other cars, make sure you know the quality and condition of them.

In regards to Chris from Brookdales suggestion about the gasket set. He is right, use all new gaskets even if its costs a bit more and you have some extra left over. Don't re-use gaskets.

Good luck.

Jakey 01-30-2006 09:32 AM

Re: Project!

If you're interested in an EPROM for your car, there is a '90 for sale on NABR that I can give you the contact information for.

Tauni 01-30-2006 09:44 AM

Re: Project!

I better get that contact info from you just in case.

Thanks for the advice Craig!!

I'll get pics of the body up soon. It's far away so give me a few days.

cudvig 01-30-2006 04:41 PM

Re: Project!

Ok.

So what I meant was that the oil cooler is different, its a good part, obviously because i had one.

But, other than that, every other part on it is stupid and almost useless!

-Colin

Kracka 01-30-2006 05:08 PM

Re: Project!

How are the other parts stupid or useless? They are different yes, but they do the exact same thing equally as well.

Tauni 01-30-2006 08:24 PM

Re: Project!

Check the WTB thread I have in the parts section if you want to see what I want it to look like when it's done. It's pretty much the same except this one is in better condition than mine. Otherwise I'll get up there some time this week and take pictures of it.

That was supposed to be my car but you got to it on sat instead of sunday. I was ready to pick it up too. O well i have enough cars. Plus you saved me a lot of gas pulling that thing across the state to Green Bay. Good luck with it!!

How do you like that intercooler, eh??
Those are like the only bad rust spots on the car. I'll get pics of the interior up later.

:EDIT: I didn't get one of the rust spots put up I'll do that later too.

Camera phone photos for president!

looks alright for the price!

Tauni 02-04-2006 03:30 PM

Re: Project!

Oh I know, My camera phone is a pile of shit. Anyways, it aint that bad. Few dings and shit here and there but I'm not complaining. Besides, everything came with it, so I thought the price was fair.

Goat Blower 02-04-2006 04:08 PM

Re: Project!

That rust doesn't look that bad. If it hasn't gone all the way through, I'd just fix it, you can have the whole car sprayed pretty reasonably at Maaco if you pull out the lights, trim, etc and go with the factory color.

Tauni 02-04-2006 05:31 PM

Re: Project!

I like the factory color. I would love to have it done, but I gotta concentrate on getting it running first haha! But I'll keep that in mind once the car is finished! Thanks!

Halon 02-04-2006 06:18 PM

Re: Project!

I think that's what I'll be doing with my car. Removing everything myself, maybe doing a little prep work myself, and just having Maaco spray it. I know they may not be as nice as other places, but I am not going to pay more for my paint job, then I paid for the car itself. As long as it looks decent, that's all I ask. I don't need show quality.

FattyBoomBatty 02-04-2006 07:18 PM

Re: Project!

Next - you need a body kit.

SO true. How much is just thre spray? Does anyone have a clue on that one? And for the prep work what all needs to be done? I know the basics but I'd like to also do the prep work myself.

No body kits. I'm putting the side skirts back on and that's the closest to a body kit I'll ever have. :p

TheBlizzard 02-04-2006 09:26 PM

Re: Project!

If you are going to drive the car in the winter a cheap Maaco paint job will not be ok. It will be chipped to shit within one year. If you are going to store the car in the winter then it wouldn't be a bad idea.
