I showed pictures of my transmission case splitting. Is it possible to replace just that section (closest to the engine block) of the transmission case? Reason I ask is because I know the internals of my tranny are in great shape...it is just the case that is screwed.
I have been trying to find a 23 spline tranny locally and not seem to be around at the moment...you guys up in the Great Lakes area have all of them I guess! ;)

Are you talking about the bellhousing? That is the area where the clutch engages / disengages from the Transmission. Im pretty sure this can be replaced, how ever I will check the tranny in my garage tonight or tomorrow and give you a straight answer if someone else hasnt gotten to it yet.

Are you still looking for a 23 spline t-case? I might have on sitting around. I'm not 100% sure if its a 23 or 22 spline. I ran into a problem where I bought a non-matching tranny for my t-case so I had to switch to a different t-case and now I have one that wont be used for quite some time. I'll check tomorrow and post on here if you still need one.

Hey Josh,
I am sorry but I am used to domestic type designs and most of the time the bellhousing is a seperate unit from the gear box...unbolt it...bolt on new and you are on your way.
It looks like the tranny on the TSi has a bellhousing...but that bellhousing is a part of the gearbox layout. Like it is integral to the gearbox and if you open it...you might as well do a rebuild.
I need to quit being so lazy and go pull this prick out...has to be done anyway...and see how it is made up. Or just look at my damn manuals! ;)
Let me know what you see Josh!
Thanks

Weren't you the one with the broken bellhousing? Seriously, just get it welded. Have them weld it inside and out and it will be stronger than new. As long as it didn't crack down to the gear area.

Well its good but bad news. Alright, from what ive seen in school, Turbo 350s, 400, C4s etc.. Those all have a bell housing that comes off with a few bolts and you could easily replace that. However, it is not that simple with an AWD transmission. I guess you COULD put a new bellhousing on it, but the axle assembly is in the same "plate" There are bolts that you can remove to seperate the "bellhousing" from the transmission case, but you will probably have gears and shit everywhere lol. I have never torn apart a manual transmission, nor do I know much about them, but it can be done. I just dont think it would be worth it.
If you have the capacity to weld the bellhousing, go for it. Just be sure to have someone tig weld it. That would probably cost you around 50-75 dollars. How did it crack and do you have pictures?

You can swap the housing, but as noted there are bearing races and other important stuff machined into it, so you should check tolerances and what not.
Yes, and shimming the bearing races are a bitch!!

I am afraid to have it welded and pass it off to someone else. I have a friend who is a master tig welder and he looked at it and said it would have to be chemically cleaned and rinsed...then with al the pourous metal it would have to be a wire fed tig with aluminum. Even then it would not be all that great. I would not want to pass on that problem to someone else when I sell it.
I am sure it came be done...I am just not comfortable with welding it.
With all that saad...I have found a couple of trannies here in Colorado and the price is fair. One I can drive before it is pulled the other is in great shape from a ruputable person.
Thanks for the advice guys!

That case is trash. You will never get you bellhousing welded back together without getting your input shaft runout going to crap. If it was just a little crack you could drill the end to stop it and then TIG it. Good choice in going for another trans.
