Speaking of deer, I ran over 2 last night (or at least what looked to be deer). The first one was just a head and neck, the second was a lumpy red 200ft long smear. This was southbound on 35E in the fast lane. Must have been taken out by trucks going at least 80.

The weirdest thing to see is when a deer gets hit by a large truck. Its just a puff of hair with blood all over the freeway. Quite a site. Sorry about your car dude.

So what exactly are you supposed to do *IF* you see the dear in time and it already has that look in its eyes? No one has ever been able to tell me and its not uncommon to see dear when I'm coming home @ night.

Well if its either you swerve off the road hit another car or tree or flip... Id rather take the deer out. If you have enough time to avoid the deer and get around it, or brake in time, then do that...

Brakes. Swerving is just asking for trouble. Hitting a deer isnt as bad as hitting just about anything else, as there is a better chance your insurance will cover the deer over a curb, street sign, or whatever depending on your coverage.

I had no chance to avoid the deer that hit me, the shoulder is steep there and there was a guardrail and tree in the way. I could have swerved, but on the snow tires I would have spun and would probably be worse off.

So yeah, from now on whenever I see a deer I just cut it to about 30mph and hope he doesnt do a jihad into the side of my car.

Also, even ifyou are on an empty road, it's still best to hit the brakes. Deer often travel in packs/pairs, so if it's really common to swerve to avoid one, and hit another that's following the other!

That happened to me & my buddies on a trip back from skiing in montana. we were 1.5 hrs east of billings. hit a deer, coast to an off ramp. sit there for 5 hours, waiting for a tow truck, get towed back to billings. car is totaled. It's sunday, so we cannot leave it at a junk yard. We rent a U-haul w/ a dolly for $650 + 700-ish miles of 7mpg, three of us in a cab w/ 2 bucket seats. 12 hour (actually, on the way there, it only took us 10.5, woot!) trop took 23 hours. I am never letting that guy drive again! Then again it was his car...

Haven't hit a deer yet, but have come close about a million times on rally weekends. Tagged a huge racoon one time though. Cracked the brand new paint on the corner of the front bumper. Folded my foglight up too. Rolled him into the ditch, he shook his head, flipped me the bird and went on his merry way. I wanted to find him and torture him but it was 3am and I wanted to get back to the hotel.
